replacing starter motor

I can feel for you. I went through a similar scenario last week with my '99 P38. Bottom bolt was piece of cake but the top one was a nightmare. Despite excellent coaching from Irishrover I was unable to get enough purchase on the top bolt. I eventually ended up taking the heat shield of the manifold and disconnected the manifold from the head. This gave me enough room to get in with the hex socket with a UJ and a bunch of extensions. Still couldn't move it with my 1/2" drive ratchet and needed my 24" master bar in the end.
This approach might be worth trying as the hex bolt is deep enough and might only be rounded at the edges. A good cleaning will help the socket get in more. Last resort is to remove the manifold altogether and then weld a hex socket onto the bolt. That should stop it from rounding...

thanks for reply. ive got afew people coming round this week to take a look i hope i dont have togo as far as taking the manifold off and welding sockets. find out this week anyway :(

hi

need to replace the starter motor on my 1996 range rover what a hell of a job its turned out to be.

cars been in my path for about 6 months. ive had little attempts every now and then but time has come were i need to fix it or sell it.

my problem is i cant get the top bolt off the starter motor i got the bottom one off no problem but the top one is so hard to get at and when i do get at it, it just wont budge.

just want to know if anyone has ever replaced there starter motor on range rover p38 how did you do it and what tools did you use, any help would be great thanks.

For the starter motor itself (not the solenoid), you can remove the starter housing base plate (front of vehicle end) by undoing the two screws and two nuts. Be careful not to lose the bearing cap and washer. Inside disconnect the cables (take a photo for reconnection), and the entire motor, pinion and bendix gear end will just slide out.

Depends a bit of what the issue is. Sometimes just giving it a good clean is enough. There are some mechanical parts in there which, if dirty, have a hard time moving. Brushes can be replaced too.
