My P38 has the Harmon kardon speakers, and no stereo.
However it appears to have two iso connectors, these seem to come straight from the wiring loom and dont appear to have been added later.
Am I right, or is a different adaptor needed too?

Think it depands what year but plugs are for Clarion head unit mostly. Get one of those and it should plug straight in. Anything else and you are into difficulties. Just read some of the threads on changing head units.

i was told on monday i can get a multy changer complet for £75 just plugs in..

hmmm. .. confused now. so does that mean that the cables are NOT ISO plugs?

they are probably....

But the HK sound system has amplifiers in each door therefore you can't just plug any old head unit in - there are lots of posts on this forum about it - some people have re-wired the doors so that they can use a 'normal' head unit.

If in doubt put a Clarion Diversity in if you can get one within your price range - or you can talk to this guy http://www.roverville.us/

i see.
I think then what I will do is use the iso power to power my alpine head unit, then install s sub and 6x9's and power them using the outputs at the rear of the head unit . Will probably be the easiest thing I think?

I have the adaptor you need to install an aftermarket stereo into a car that has the hk door amps, Its a brand new a 10 way female iso- Rca male kit, As sold on ebay for about £30. I bought it but then ended up installing a full on sound quality system as im in the ice trade myself, new install cost me near £1500 trade price. Pm me if interested in adaptor, Sam
