My 90's was running gutlessly since I had it (Buckshot will vouch)
So I decided to fleebay a replacement 300tdi engine, it was out of a discovery but the mileage 'was' less than half than what the defenders original had done.

Anyway swapped them over, connected everything up over the weekend and cranked it over but it wont start!

Crank and crank and crank and won't fire, there's diesel fumes coming out of the exhaust from cranking (minimal obviously), there's fuel getting to the top of the injector lines and I've swapped the glow plugs from my truck to the replacement engine,

But there is also a slight hint of diesel wafting from the intake manifold.

Also the cambelt, which I was going to replace, looks new so we left it. But have now decided to double check the timings (tonight's plan of attack)

Failing this I'm at a total loss as to what else to try???

Suggestions please, am so desperate to get out and play!!!

Silly question but all the electrics are connected (ie) stop soliniod cause that will stop it from starting and the other route has to fuel
Gary

I'm certainly no expert but swapped my 2.5 td to a 200tdi a couple of months back and the only start problems I had were down to fuel, I had something piped up wrong from the new fuel filter (a different one to the one that came off) to the fuel pump/lift pump, can't remember which but played around got advice and was away. I'm sure your ok on this side of things but it's the only prob I had on the swap I could relate to. Best of luck anyway and hope someone more clued up posts you with more advise.

29 hours and not a sniff of any suggestions?

As Gazs has said check you have a live feed to the fuel stop solenoid and that it you can feel it clicking when power is applied. Also check that the fuel stop solenoid still has power to it when the key is turned to the crank position as it's not unknown for them the power to show up as being there when the ignition switch is in the second position but drop out when cranked. If needs be, try running a wire direct from the battery to the stop solenoid.

Have you checked the fuel pipes are all correctly fitted and aren't allowing air to be drawn in?

Also have you primed/bled the fuel system?

To check to see if it's simply a fuel issue you could spray some easy start, carb cleaner, brake cleaner etc up the air intake to see if will fire on it.

check timing for pump isnt 180 out ,all marks lign up with pump pin with no 1 both valves closed no 4 on rock (both slightly opening valves)

Hi Gary if the stop solenoid wasn't connected would I have ANY fuel getting to the injectors? Coz when I crack off the injector lines there is fuel pumping out when it's cranked over

Cheers

Cheers Ratty, did the brake cleaner straight into the intake manifold last, my mate was spraying varying quantities each time, started with a little then a good squirt and nothing! =/

Will try the wiring direct from battery to stop solenoid tonight and see what happens.

Thanks

It should have fired on that if all was well. Try pulling the filter housing apart and spraying it direct in there. It could be that your filter was blocking it from getting through. I find heating the can up on the heater vent of my truck aids combustion too. Don't cook the can mind.;)

If you find that you have dropped the feed frrom the ignition to the stop solenoid pm me or get my number of Buckshot and ring me and I'll tell you where you can wire a feed from without having to mess about too much.;)

For security reasons I don't fancy posting it on here.

Probably gonna be the weekend now Ratty if thats ok but cheers, I'll get ur number off Buckshot, but yeah probably best not to post it on here lol

My mate was tinkering with it for a couple hours last night, and he said the fuel pump was 180 degs out as suggested by jamesmartin so cheers for that, but it still won't fire, but there's no diesel fumes coming out of the intake manifold now,

My mate is a landrover mechanic but tbh he's more used to td5s and tdci as he's a youngster. but even he is flummoxed!

Trouble is the mrs is back from uni for a couple days and apparently the truck shouldn't be a priority  so hopefully I'll be back on it Saturday afternoon ;)

It works!!!!

Turns out it was a combination of incorrect valve clearances & timing being a mile out.

But my god it felt good when it fired up yesterday afternoon!!!

Thanks for all the help and advice guys, just gotta finish putting it back together now =) and tonight's project is the through cab air intake!
