Just bought 2001 DiscoTD5, - TAKEN ME YEARS TO GET! -20 miles from garage sitting stationery at traffic lights, transmission oil temperature light came on, pulled off road to look at handbook to see what it said, switched on again and all was fine -I thought I may have left handbrake slightly engaged, that was 2 days ago light seems to be coming on whenever the vehicle is stationery and ticking over, -never comes on when I'm driving, am I doing something wrong, AS i'VE JUST GOT IT i'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT YET, ANY SUGGESTIONS -I'M LOSING SLEEP!

Hi Nick, by transmission do you mean the automatic gear temprature warning, if so there's a sensor in the pipework just before the oil cooler positioned infront of the radiator, it's not unknown for the switch to go faulty. It's a simple replacement.

Thanks for that 'Discool' , I've only done 150 miles since I bought it so I'm going to take it back to the garage tomorrow-I paid all the money for it (8 grand plus my shogun, no doubt they'll try to get out of it by saying electrics are not covered, I'm really p****D off about it I really thought I'd found the right one after saving for 2 years and chucking in a perfectly good old shogun, I was the happieest person on the planet -fpr about 15 miles!

Nothing to get too concerned about so rest easy! The reason it comes on at low speed, or stationary, is partially due to insufficient air flow (cooling). It may well be (quite likely) that the sensor is faulty and it shows up by illuminating at temperatures it woud otherwise happily accept.

Check your g/box oil though, a low reading will give the same symptons as will old oil with broken down properties. If it hasn't been changed for a while then fresh oil will be a good move. As has already been said though, the temp sensor is a cheap and simple repair.

Brilliant ! I'm going to sleep tonight after al! -tomorrow when I take it back to garage I'm going to quote what you guys have advised and see what they have to say, -and rest assured -I'll stay frosty! regards-Nick.

I'm so glad I found you bunch, just one last question,IF it is just a sensor, I guess the garage is going to say it's an electrical part, should the whole job be covered by my 3 month warranty do you think, -parts and labour? as I said I onlly bought the landy on Friday! -but I've just been looking at the warranty and they seem to have left themselves a lot of 'get outs' -This is the most expensive car I've ever been able to afford -I paid in full-8k +shogun, and this cleaned out my savings and what if it's more than a sensor! I should have got more than 20 miles of joy out of it surely!

bugger the wording on their warrentee... tell them to fix it....if they quibble get on to your local trading standards and ask them .... youll be surprised at what the garage has to do and how long you can keep going back. all garages know that the customer doesnt know the law and rely on bull****ting about what they are obligated to fix .

Hi Nick and Welcome, sorry to hear that you are having trouble, especially after paying so much for your car.

In my book after paying over the odds as much as you have done, the garage should be fixing ANY worries you have with the car or you want your money back immediately.

Then they should take you and your family out to lunch to say sorry.

Presumably at that money your car is low mileage and full service history? This is a 2001 pre-facelift car right? £8000 - you've paid all the money for that car so you should expect impeccable, no argument assistance.

Yeah, I'm getting ready for a showdown, tomorrow, I was promised so much and was too impressed by the 'showroom shine', - god I wish my computer chair was as comfortable as the Disco! -I'm going to quote your diagnosis to the salesman, sit down in his plush office and not move until I hear him say he'll fix it! -are these sensors easily available, -just so I can tell him

Nick if I may, I'll offer you a piece of advice. In your shoes I would not offer solutions and suggestions to the garage too soon. It's their job to sort out problems not yours. If you say what you believe to be the problem they will fix that and then, potentially, wash their hands of you.

I can't remember if you have said how long you have had the car, but do bear in mind your legal rights to a full refund, if the purchase was recent.

Hopefully there wont be a need for a showdown. Give the garage an opportunity to fix it amicably. You may be surprised. There are some (not many perhaps) good garages out there.

However, if they disagree go in all guns blazing!!! You are entitled to have it in full working order for that money.

Also I agree with thebiglad, just tell them what the fault is and let them get on with it.

Thanks to 'thebiglad', I controlled myself when I returned Disco to garage on Monday -you were right not all garages are total mercenaries, so, I've just taken back my 'courtesy car', and picked up my Landy, with new sensor fitted, gearbox oil changed, and a mega valet, my opening line was, -I'm a very patient man, BUT...........!
REGARDS, NICK.

That's a great approach Nick and sounds as though it was successful. But do keep an eye on things.
