Hi,

With the bad weather and some general recovery work I have been worndering if recovery equipment such as ropes/straps and shackles get to a point where they have to be replaced.

Obviously if they are damaged etc they should be but I mean just general age.

Thanks

Check the weaves in the ropes/straps, they should be tight and not spaced out. It shouldn't be too frayed either. Look for consistency. Anything that looks odd/inconsistent is probably a sign of wear and/or damage.

My pro-comp strap with a 10t rating got damaged today during its first recovery. (An American style UPS van) The strap was correctly fitted too. I'm a bit gutted tbh because it wasn't particularly cheap.

Imo it's always a good idea to have a mix of gear in the back of your Landy anyway, so it won't harm to buy some more ropes/straps. I had stuff ranging from cheap (£5) 2t tow rope with hooks, general purpose rope with no hooks (usually used for tie-downs) and a 10t pro comp recovery strap. I've now ordered a replacement recovery strap, although it's nothing overly special.

ropes n strops ive used are always washed and dried before storing. I suspect any dragging of strops/ropes on tarmac will lead to accelerated wear.If its fitted correctly and rated high enough for the loads then there shouldnt be damage, but stopping at junctions ect means the ropes can go slack and drag.

Same here clean/wash/dry the inspect for damage, also check recovery points and the hardwear like shackels, then pack away in back of landy, that way if its damaged in any way you can assess it and either replace or reuse/fix.

I always put a small bit of copper slip on my shackels as well, as I have had them bind with grit/sand from off roading, some will say its wrong more then likely but I have found it makes things easier with gloves on in ****y conditions and cold weather.

Hang on a minute, you are saying that this was the first time you have used this strap???

But I have read numerous postings you have made on here about what great straps these pro-comp stratps are, and how everyone should go out and buy one.

But now you are saying that you have been making these recommendations to people, but have never actually used the friggin strap or tested it!!!:eek::mad::mad:How irresponsible is that, particularly given your experience the first time you have used it. It is far better to say nothing than give out inaccurate and potentially dangerous advice to others.:doh:

I bought a 5tonne towing strap form MachineMart a couple of years ago and that got damaged first time I used it. But only because the ****er I was towing (he'd run out of fuel) drove onto the strap when we stopped at the roundabout. and when I set off I had to yank it out from under his wheel.

Your not the only one that noticed that, perhaps it just shows how easy it is to find unfounded info on the forums, does this show how experianced the user realy is.

Was it fault of the tow strap or just not used as the manufacturers intended, or was it the fault of a thrid party, more likely we will never know, because if it was not the fault of the strap then it will not be put on here.

It is interesting how this time he has gone for a cheapy off ebay........

As others have indicated, it is not the strap that is the problem, it is the unquantified advice that is being given out and passed off as being from authorative and experienced users.

I have no doubt that pro-comp straps are as good as any other others.

To be fair to the muppet I towed in a LWB semi hightop transit. he did give me a tenner to replace the strap.

Not that I ever have. Just spent the tenner..
