My disco has driven for the last few months on a Halfords air filter jobby, but I changed the other day to another cheapo effort from paddocks. It seems a bit more free revving with this newer cheapo filter but still seems to be struggling to breath properly.

Before anyone asks, I havent done the EGR yet, it's unplugged but not removed as I haven't had the time.

k&n are free flow filters they are abit expensive but you wont need to buy another for that landy just the solution and wash it once in a while

I change all the filters on mine every 6000mls - with a 3-filter kit costing only £6.28+vat, why wouldn't you??

I'm intrigued to know why you believe your motor is not breathing correctly? Can you explain?

The 2 best cheap mods on a TDi 300 are: De-Catt and De-EGR. Both of these will help the motor to work to it's optimum.

Cheers
Dave

Got to be K&N, 300Tdi/ Mpi K&N can be bought for around the £30 mark, 200 Tdi can be bought for around £38, blank of your EGR, get a plate and a washer for around £5 off ebay and have a scan round for a metal hoover pipe cut to size and take off the whole unit, also after youve taken off you EGR take out your intercooler and give it a good clean you'l be surprised of how much kack is in there, fill with petrol and leave for half hour or so then get hose pipe in there and give it a good wash through, then ah used our lasses hair dryer, dry it out leave it running for 5min shake any excess water out and repeat until no water can be shook out, now she can breath without any restrictions, hope this helps.

Hi, sorry for the delay. Thanks for the replies, I do have an EGR removal kit to fit, just not got round to it yet. On the subject of intercooler, been there done that. When I spotted my turbo hose had a split I took off all of the hoses just to check for any probs and cleaned the lot out. Intercooler was fine too.

When I say I think it's not breathing properly, I'm going on the fact that it revs quite freely but there still seems to be a lack of tug/power. To compare, I've also got a 1.2 Fiesta that feels quicker than the big old disco. I know they are sluggish but I'd expect to feel at least a little bit of pull from pressing the noise pedal to the floor.

Rob, i'm interested as to why you think K&N filters are a waste of money? surley a filter thats as free flowing as a K&N cant be a bad thing??

The question is more a matter of why you would want to spend £35 ish on an airfilter when paper filters can be bought for about £3??

Because the K&N filters are supposed to let the engine breathe more freely, my 2 sons have both got hot hatches and both have K&N indution kits, they are said to add up to 8 more horse power!!!

For me the main advantage is they are washable...

That said you really want two so you can have a clean one ready for swapping, that's a lot of paper filters you can buy!

You can't get more power from an air filter unless you can re-map/jet the fuelling to suit

One of my other cars is a 2 ltr hatch back which is now hot, its had the head with big valves, camshaft, exhaust etc changed and when put on the rolling road I could only get one extra bhp because of a K&N filter over the standard lump, so eight BHP no way, I also have a Kenlow fitted which only gave me six.

And don't forget K&N's don't filter as well as standard filter, the idea is to get more air into the engine, unfortunatly if you don't have bigger inlet valves that stay open for longer then the amount of air entering the engine will be the same as if using a standard filter. Then you need an exhaust system to help get rid of what you are putting through the engine.

Standard air filters work just as well as K&N, and no maintenance required, just replace.

i have a K&N in mine and have been told that the oils in it can affect the mass airflow sensor (if you have a wire not a flap one i think) and that you will periodically have to clean it (the sensor and the filter). Its not supposed to beef it up any as the engine management automatically adjusts any changes although i think with the leads and exhaust ive fitted it does seem a little more responsive, I added it as it needed replacing and i always try to replace things with better bits/bits that will last longer/bits i'll never have to change again.

I had a disco 200 Tdi that ran for 229K miles when I sold it, and it did 200K on the K&N filter, no problems and cleaned it twice. I think the choice is personal and the benifts marginal, but I did notice some slight improvenmnt when I fitted it and also same on my 300 Tdi. I suppose it could be psychological..

K&N on a TDi200, there's no downside as there's no Maf to affect, on TDi 300 it's a bit different as there is a MAF.
