when i switch the front wiper on either by pressing down or switching on the rear wiper comes on too. is this normal?????

Sounds like the reverse light switch is on. Normally the back wiper would come on if the fronts are on and you select reverse gear so applying the converse it could be a faulty switch. Check your reverse lights aren't on all the time.

......or they don't come on when in some or all of the forward gears.
