After only a couple of months, the rear offside hub has got a leak...from within the bearings, not between the axle casing and the o-ring of the hub. The dark green/black grease smells of EP80/90 - gear oil from the axle. The ABS sensor housing part appears to have leaked in addition to the bearings.
This was purchased from LR Trades in Riccall, Yorkshire with 12 months warranty. No it isn't Britpart they said, but their own spec similar to Bearmach.

Only noticed the issue because I was checking pad wear and noticed black gunk on the inner third of the inside pad. I know I should buy a new set of pads, but a quick clean and wire brush on the pad has helped. ;)

I presume I'd have to pay for a new one, then send the old one back to get a credit (that way the Disco isn't immobilised, rather than returning the old hub and waiting for the new) we shall see.
 
id explain issue ,and get a replacement first,you may have to pay for it till you return the faulty part but you shouldnt be left with vehicle off the road ,their own spec ?i doubt theres many factories making disco wheel hubs to give any choice

I was wondering that, but how come the grease is present between the static and rotating parts of the hub and being flung out when the hub rotates? The gunk near the ABS sensor would not drip outwards and into that area.
 
The buggers are shut until 2nd January (can't say I blame 'em :) ).

Question is, do I save up and blow £300-ish each on genuine LR hubs next time? :eek: OR just buy 4 hubs and leave them in me shed? :)
 
Look how long the genuine parts lasted before they needed changed, then look at the part you have that is failing already, guess which way you should have gone.

There is an unfortunate reason genuine parts are expensive, that's because LR know that by the time you have finished faffing around buying pattern parts and then another few trips back and forth to get them swapped out for ones that fit as well as work then having to replace them sooner than you would a genuine part they know that you will in real terms spend a lot more without realizing it and they get to laugh about it too, especially when you end up buying genuine parts any way after it suddenly dawning on you that you could have saved time, money and hassle buying genuine parts in the first place :rolleyes:
 
lr genuine parts are dear because of profit margin,ive seen what they used to pay for parts in the 90s and compared it to their retail prices ,i shouldnt think mark up has changed much since ,ive fitted lots of britpart hubs never had a failure yet (though i hope im not tempting fate saying that )even some genuine parts fail
 
Reasoned arguments for and against; I did go for genuine top & bottom steering ball joints and genuine Watt's linkage bushes for dd69's logic, but......

Box of aftermarket hubs it is then :D LOL Having fitted a hub with some help, I'm confident about swapping them out, but would like to get at least a couple of years from them without them wobbling or having the bearing's own internal seals going knacked.

Hear, hear !

Car manufacturers original parts are expensive because the car manufacturer wants to make 'loads'a money" - lets face it, these LR hubs are not made by LR, they are made by an army of suppliers.

In an ideal world we would like to know who supplies LR with their bits, so we can buy from the actual manufacturer not LR. The parts may not come in LR boxes but I'll survive.

So far so good. New hub ordered...and paid for, only because the old one's on the Landy so can't do an exchange with the courier. LR Trade parts will credit me when I send the old one back. There's been a price decrease, but they said they will still credit me the old price :cool:
