Steer with a vice. I have done it with mole grips and seen others do the same

Crimp the gear stick and change gear with tweezers... Again I have done this with mole grips. I have also done this with a small trolley jack handle and a jubilee clip.

If I offered to give you £1000 if you could move a vehicle 100yds down the road complete with all your security items still attached do ya rekon you would find a way to take my money off me?

Would you Ratty bother though if there was another Defender with no security on it that's easier to steal parked beside? I know you're playing devils advocate but there must be some good to having security than none at all. I'm doing my best here to protect something that I cherish. You can't blame a guy for that...

If someone smashes up their landy or wants to ring a vehicle and yours is the only one in the area that matches it colour wise would a theif go fo one a different colour or would yours be worth spending the extra time on? Has someone pointed out your vehicle to a gang out nicking vehicles to order or are you just unlucky enough to have your vehicle attacked by some scrote who doesn't want to walk home?

As a lot of security devices do not have to be overcome BEFORE taking the vehicle what is their actual purpose?

Yes I am playing the devils advocate but I'd rather that people were paranoid and kept a closer eye and ear on their landy than tell everybody that just because you fit a steering lock your vehicle will still be there in the morning.

The real question with any security device is not "Will it stop them taking my motor..." but "How long will it slow them down for"

Agreed Ratty. Point of the post is to have peoples awareness raised and to get information about security devices and their usefulness. I do not believe that it makes a car impossible to steal but it makes it less desirable. Of course a car can be selected to order by a gang but then at that point any car could fit that bill. Even if it was chained to the ground with an armed guard it could still be stolen... If they wanted it that much.

If this thread has raised peoples awareness, and it can't be denied that it has, then I am happy that it is serving it's purpose.

The opposite side of the coin is that the less people that fit security, the less likely yours will be targeted.

Just read the first page and had a look at X-Defends website...
I like the peddlebox in particular

but one thing that jumpe dout immediately, was the use of cylindrical locks, you know, round keys.. I forget their name exactly. I've seen them open with a pen. examples of lock type here...

Maybe they're not all the same lock design, but I'd be nervous of any radial/cylindrical lock after seeing those short videos.

Ratty, what do you think of fitting a Mech Lock (from MUD) fitted on the brakes?

You wouldn't be able to drive or push it.

I could not agree more. I just want the thread to stick to topic. Loads of other threads cover fantasy ways of keeping thieves away. This whole thread is meant to be useful information for everyone.

So does anyone know of a case or cases where a Clutch-Claw and Disklok clad Defender has been nicked?

If so, were the devices cut off or otherwise beaten (in terms of being removed and rendering the vehicle drivable) or was the Defender just lifted onto a flatbed?

Hypothesising is interesting but of very limited use. What we really need is documented cases and facts of thefts, attempted thefts and what security measures were in use at the time.

Finally, why is this country allowed to be so choc-full of thieving robbing gutter scum. With respect, why can't repeat car thieves and burglars/muggers etc be er ...well.... gassed, for want of a better expression? Really, what's the point of em? 'Er, actually Bazza - you're not going to Parkhurst for three months this time - you're going to the fekin chair, you grubby stinking crack-snorting thieving little chuffer. We can hear your appeal whilst your cinders are being brushed into the prison flowerbeds and, guard, use the dry sponge'.

I can't find where I got this from but it was results from a car magazine test. Disklok did come out top but that's not saying much.

Attack time: 117 seconds
The Disklok looks better in silver than the original yellow - at least until our attack started. This time, using a similar method to last year, it took 117 quiet seconds to defeat

Yes it would make it stand out.
And even if you made the back of the van secure with locks and grills 'n' stuff. Wouldn't it be easier for the 'fekers' to nick the van and work on getting in the back at their leisure.

said it before.
weld a strong bar through strong chain @ the end link.
dig big hole in concreted drive
or make BIG concreted section,
and place concrete bar & chain end inplace till concrete dries.

back up landie to the end of chain, roll it over the axle
(if you cover the chain in an old innertube, it wont make a noise)
padlock chain end to rest of chain,
then drive back over rest of chain..
when parked-no one can see it.

but drive off in landie without unpadlocking it,
results in,
1) feckin loud noise
2) feckin broken face of anyone driving it!

now, comments of mythical anti theft ideas can go away,
as this Idea is a real one that works.

It all depends on how much you treasure YOUR property!
