LAND ROVER owners are being encouraged to make use of free marking kits to help defend them against thieves.

Durham Constabulary are providing owners of Land Rover Defenders with International Security Register (ISR) kits which are used to etch a unique code on parts and panels.

Police officers attended Barnard Castle Auction Mart yesterday and used the ISR marking kits, which are usually £35, as part of a proactive crime prevention initiative.

Special Constable Ross Moralee said: “Although we have a low crime rate, when vehicle thefts do occur, Land Rover Defenders are often targeted.

“We want to encourage owners to take advantage of the free marking kits available. Having several key sections of your vehicle marked with these hi-tech kits make it identifiable and much easier to get the vehicle and parts back to the original owner.“

Police will also be attending Darlington Farmers Auction Mart on 14th, 17th and 21st August where owners can have their Defender's marked for free if they live in County Durham. It is a strictly first come first served basis.
