Range Rover Vogue 4.4 new battery flat overnight.

Hi, I've just bought a 2002 Range Rover Vogue 4.4

The previous owner had just fitted a brand new Halfords battery, everything seemed fine until the next morning when the battery was totally flat, nothing at all.

Jumped it from a boost pack and it started no problem, let it run for a while, checked the alternator was charging which it was. Switched it off and left it 5 mins, tried it again and nothing, totally dead.

What could cause a brand new battery to completely drain flat overnight ?

Any help would be appreciated as this is my first Range Rover and I'm not very familiar with them.

Search the site for Final Stage Resistor...

This can breakdown causing a battery drain....

Also check your headlamp wipers are parking properly

As above, but if it's not those things........
How do you know the battery is charging, what voltage do you have at the battery with the engine at 2K rpm.
Running the engine for 4 or 5 hours would be necessary to recharge a flat battery.
Not uncommon for new batteries to fail either.

Checked battery with multimeter with engine running and it was showing around 14 volts.

I'm going to remove the battery today and fully charge it and then see what happens afterwards.

Should be around 14.5 volts.

is it the right battery the crank amps are crucial to turn the engine you need at least 850cca 110ah

Just checked, it's a Halfords HB019 800cca 95ah. Is that the right battery ?

Checked the battery before charging with a multimeter and it's showing 0.01 volts so is completely drained !!

That battery is fecked....

Is it knackered because something is draining it or is it just knackered though ?

Don't want to put a new battery on if it's not the problem.

Take the battery back to Halfrauds, it's fecked. Should be under warranty.

May not need one, the battery should be date stamped. Worth a try.
halfrauds are very expensive, if you need to replace the battery, try battery megastore on line.

The battery has been on charge for a while, just checked it with a multimeter and it's showing 12.3 volts.

If it's knackered would it take a charge or not ?

That is what I meant

A car battery reading below 11v is dead.......0.01v is totalled....you may put volts in during a charge, but it is unlikely to hold that charge the moment the charger is disconnected or a load is applied to the battery.....

Rule 1 with Range Rover diagnostics.....ensure you have a known good battery and decent charge from the alternator....then work from there....second guessing with a potential duff battery is foolhardy....

Start with a decent battery, if it still drains, you know to look elsewhere.

How long was it on charge and at what current? 12.3 volts indicates almost flat, if that was all you got straight after taking it off charge I would say the battery is knackered, you should have seen at least 13 volts dropping to perhaps 12.8 volts after an hour off charge.

if you do manage to charge it when you connect your leads up, do positive up and just touch the neg to its terminal, and if there is a spark then you have some kind of drain or a bad short

It was on charge for most of the day with a pretty decent Clarke charger.

If something on the car was draining the battery down overnight, would you expect to see the battery drained to 0.01 volts ?

had a call from customer/friend of mine who left his car standing which flattened his battery over a month or so,he purchased a new battery & attempted to start it but just clicked as alternator had seized ( smart car)i actually ended up buying it from him,got it back to my work freed alternator & recharged the brand new battery,tested the brand new battery before fitting(precaution) & it was totally shot,some chinese brand ive never heard of.fitted a quality replacement & no probs sinse.so the long & short is never eliminate a battery even if it is new.
