It's all about family and values mate, where I work is quite a large west indian community where many of the men have as many kids as they can with as many women as they can without any consideration for their upbringing or education leaving the mothers to bring up numerous kids alone without moral or financial support while the men spend their days smoking weed ,drinking,or gambling. The majority of these men if asked would say they can't find a job but have never been near the job center or even looked for work and it's not just the west indian community where this is becoming the norm it's all cultures now.If the parents aren't willing to instill a work ethic and moral values in these kids what hope does the government have, YOU CAN ONLY HELP THOSE WHO ARE READY TO HELP THEMSELVES,no pun intended.
You are most qualified to voice your opinion 'cos you live in the Black Country,...pun intended.:D

Datatek, "taxes have gone up & up"
I`ve found 1973 rates for income tax in UK:
basic rate 30% higher rate 75% Both a lot more than now. (IFS.org.uk)
80% wasted? tax-exiles you like...

Income tax has gone down, NI has gone up, stealth taxes have been invented, propery rates have gone throught the roof, fuel tax as a proportion of fuel cost has gone up, then we have TV licence, insurance tax, VAT, airline departure tax, road tax etc etc, do the sums, they have more than recovered the cash lost on lower income tax.
I can't afford to live in the UK, My basic rate of tax here is 5% compared to 20% in the UK, my property tax is a quarter of what I paid in the UK, TV licence is less as is fuel for the car not to mention no road tax.

A lot of crap spoken on here! Nothing to do with the government, wealthy people.......just look at the spread of the mongs who were rioting, some with jobs, good prospects, decent families and alot of lazy sick notes who have no intention to work even if a good job was on their doorsteps. Its not hard to go out and make a little money without breaking the law if you have a bit of initiative, motivation and a desire to stand on your own two feet.

I suppose the only government link is do with punishment and prison but beyond then look at the schoolchildren who rioted they haven't even had time to decide if they will work towards working for a living or sponge of the state and commit crime. any decent parent would surely want their child to grow up into a decent person with good values and not like the scum****ers a few miles from me in Salford. Seems like they are already being moulded to carry on with the ****head mindset to take what you want from other people instead of working for it.

Surely its not the governments job to turn everyone into law abiding robots purely because there will be a hefty punishment if they don't - we are human beings and make our own choices and the people we grow up to be are moulded by our parents/family. Respect for others, yourself, your environment and community.

The only thing these ****s respect is the criminals who lives on their estates who are on a higher level than themselves, they don't dare cross them, or commit petty crime on their doorsteps. so they rule by fear in the immediate community but its no problem to go and smash up someone else's business nearby.

****ing scum of the earth the lot of them and it was brilliant to see the decent people of the community coming out in force to try and show the 'minority' that they would not stand for the behaviour. .....rant over.

It's succesive governments that, by manipulating the tax regime, have actively discouraged marriage, and with benefits have encouraged single mothers. Have a kid at 16, get housed and get benefit, have another kid get a better flat. It's the route many young girls have taken. Then look at what is preached by the teaching profession regarding discipline.

Governments set the framework in which society exists, remove the constraints and it's human nature that some will take advantage to the detrement of the majority.

Datatek, by removing tax from income to expenditure, the burden moves from richer to poorer people; We all, rich & poor, spend on fuel, and living expenses, tv licences but we the less well off spend more of our income on living, and don`t have the option of avoiding taxes by stuffing money into our mattresses! (or offshore accounts). That is manipulation of the tax system.

Quite right, it's the rich wot gets the gravey and the poor wot gets the blame. But then politicians fall into the rich category, why would they increase their own tax liability with direct taxation?
I reckon politicians should be paid the average working mans salary plus a bonus for every annual reduction in the tax take that doesn't affect services combined with reduction of the national debt. Income tax should hit the high earners not the those on average salaries much as was the case in the past when the average working man with a family paid no income tax.

I'll do it for no salary:D First off build some proper prisons on the uninhabited islands off the north of the UK. All in concrete USA stye 1 per cell, no TV, no mobile phones, no gymnasiums, no swimming pools, a budget of £2.50 per day per person for food. Bring back Hanging for murder if the evidence is beyond doubt, these days with DNA there is much less likelyhood of mistakes. Castration for second rape offences.
Any non British passport holder convicted of any offence deported to country of origin without appeal. Only English language in schools and on official documents. If you want live in my country learn the language or **** off. Just for starters:)

Well said Keith. Could not agree more with those comments.

Agree that Politicians should be paid a multiple of the average wage, or the minimum wage. And the CEO of a company should be paid a multiple of the lowest paid employee (or contractor) of said company. Bosses want to earn more; they pay more.
We`re all much better off (in terms of possessions) than 50 years ago, but many are unhappy. Why? Inequality! I don`t say we all should be paid the same, but things are too biased in favour of those in power.
And surely all (almost) politicians are unfit for the post as they must be flawed characters to want to tell us what to do anyway.
No solutions offered here, just my own humble opinion.

This mainly started with Thatcher when she had interest rates at 16%. This made it more profitable to business men to close their factories and place their money in a bank or shares abroad. Instead of running a business all year for a profit of 8 or 9% then paying tax on it. She virtually single handedly closed Britain down as a manufacturing base. The Tory fiscal policy has always been drip down economics. Labour under Blair continued the same strategy to keep in with big business. But when investment in Britain did not come, were forced to have a givaway hand out policy to keep the people quiet. The Tories have removed most of that. People are now feeling the pinch, not the bankers who caused this by investing abroad and losing billions of pounds that the ordinary people are now having to pay back. Instead of business's here recieving investment, growing and providing jobs for the working class, all the investment moved abroad and created jobs in China, India, Japan, eastern Europe anywhere but here. School kids were moved into further education to cut the dole queues and reduce unemployment figures. Because there simply are not the jobs available for them to take up on leaving school. Because of the lack of investment. Of all the people now at univesity very few will have job to go to when they leave. Other than McDonalds that is. This leaves no work at all for the vast majority of kids leaving school. The reason Toyota have a factory here is not because the British work force is the best in the world. It's because if all the bits made in Japan are sent here to be assembled it is classed as a car made in Europe. Which does not attract import duties. More profit for Toyota. There is a bomb waiting to go off in this country if some serious rethinking is not do very quickly.

Agree with you there Wammers.
Strange how now Cameron talks about "big society" when a certain political predecessor of his said: "there is no such thing as society". (Oct 1987)
I`m no fan of Mr Scargill, but closing our mines to pay workers to go on the dole so we could import Polish coal and Chinese steel is simple insanity, then and now.
Short-termism. All caused by having politicians concerned over party ideological aims, not the long term well being of the majority.

Thatcher wanted to cut trade unions down to size. To be fair some did need that to a certain extent. But to close the mines when we sit on 400 years worth of coal. Then to use the estimated at the time 250 years worth of north sea gas for domestic heating, to produce electricity was madness. What could have kept people warm cheaply for a couple of hundred years has all been used up. We now have to import most of the gas we use. One thing that did come out of the miners strike was that whatever you think of Scargill he never told a lie. Only the government told lies in that dispute. There was a court case where he accused the police of unprovoked assualt, he was branded a liar. He lost the case. Some years later the unprovoked assualt was show on television. Were he was walking along the road and was beaten to the ground by a police officer. One would wonder where the footage was at the time of the court case.

RIP Broken Britain..
You went soft on discipline!..
You went soft on immigration!
You pay people not to work!...
You went soft on crime..
Parents were told.. 'No you can't smack the kids'....
Teachers were prevented from chastising kids in schools..
The police couldn't clip a troublemaker round the ear..
Kids had rights blah blah blah..
Well done Britain..You shall reap what you sow..
We have lost a whole generation!!

gafferjim, couldnt agree more.when a man carnt defend his castle from a lowlife without being persecuted by the law its time for a serious look at our legal system. As jamie said, there is no respect for anybody these days, its dog eat dog.Fur trapper, agree with everything you said except............do you have to buy Mrs trapper a gaylander?

Maybe if people were proud of their country instead of constantly highlighting its faults things could be better. There's far worse places to be.

Idealistically great.. but whats to be proud of living in england? i got a tattoo on me arm a british bulldog with england underneath i had when i was 16 i was proud to be english maybe naivety i dunno but ive seen many changes over the years as we all have and i can say i am not proud to be english anymore.. but i agree theres worse places to be

****s me right off, i'll hazard a guess most people slagging this country off have never lived anywhere else. Yes, its got problems, deep seated serious issues that need to be tackled...but its also one of the most forward thinking, innovative, co-operative and believe it or not, respected nations on earth.

When theres a catastrophe anywhere, its often british engineers, military and nurses that lead.

Every generation blames the last for its problems, but we're here now, put up or shut up. What have you done, apart from that accident of birth, that gives you the right to slag off this nation? No wonder kids riot when adults dont respect the land, the law or the history.

Off my soapbox now.

this country provides the best education in the world if you are willing to put the effort in ,it looks after you when you ain't in work,it looks after your health better than may countries considering the strain the nhs is under,it's armed forces are the best in the world and has given the world more industry and technology and literature than any other country it's by far the most tolerant nation on the planet when it comes to personal lifestyle choice and all people can do is dwell on the bad parts,it's no wonder it's being taken from under us when it's own people don't seem to like it.
