Range Rover P38 Engine Change

Hi!

I am going to change the engine in my P38 due to timing chain failure to a similar engine that has gone less miles.

Was wondering if there's anything I should think of before doing this procedure?

Have some questions:
1. As I change the engine, it's recommened to change the fluids right? Engine oil, transmission oil?
2. Thinking of the turbo, how many miles do you think it'll keep up? Thinking of changing mine.
3. Is there a guide to change the engine? Heard from mechanics that it should be on a lift and the engine goes down, not up?

Change all fluids on new engine. Engine comes out through top cannot go down. Check that turbo spins freely with no wobble on shaft. Engine removal detailed in RAVE see my "How to" for download. Or search the site.

I think he needs a new mechanic too if he has been advides to drop the engine....I mean it is not like there is a solid beam axle in the way....oh no wait a minute there is....!!

Ok thanks for the help! Ok, have download RAVE got a bunch of files but don't really know how to install or view the manual, could you please link?

If you did the download from my link you will need to unzip them. If you have done that and as you say got a load of files just double click on the RAVE logo within those files to open it. Send that LOGO to desktop as a short cut. Good luck.

Go to the "how To" section at the top of the page, it's in Wammers thread.

Just got the car, was attempting to start it to check if the engine sounds or anything but couldn't get the engine to start.

Removed the fuse from position 11, is there anything more I should do?
The alarm don't seem to work, can only unlock from the right hand door (LHD), the some of the locks on the door doesn't seem to work.

When I tried to start the car it was connected to a another car because of bad battery

Btw. is there any page in the RAVE where they show how to change engine?

Nothing will work correctly with a poor battery, they don't like being jumped.
Fuse in position 11 is for towing, fit it to tow it.

Ok thanks for that, yes took it away, will the gearbox work even if it's in position 11?

No the fuse in position 11 is to disable the gearbox so it can be towed
This fuse must be removed before atempting to drive

Fuse 11 will make the Transfer Box select Neutral...you will still be able to select a drive gear through the main box, but you will get no drive at all as the transfer box is in neutral!

Waiting for the engine to arrive I've been trying to start the old one to look if I hear some noises. But it don't seem to even want to start. The battery was completely drained, so I've had it on charge for 2 days now. When I'm trying to start the car it says engine disabled, press key(?). Trying to press the buttons on the key but nothing happens.
Also the central lockning doesn't seem to work as I unlock the car from drivers side.

Any idea?

Thought it was remove it to tow it, removing it selects Neutral

I wonder how an open circuit drives the motor to neutral

Fuse in to select neutral.

Ok thought my Manuel said remove before towing . Been a long time since I read it just checking
