RANGE ROVER P38 2001 V8 4LITRE...Thor

Hi everyone the whistling range rover...perhaps problem solved..Right hand head gasket, but look what I found on removing intake manifold...it was quite a surprise.
This may be of help to other owners who encounter the same problem as outlined in my initial posts.
Off to machine shop later this week for check and skim.

Great find.....know you know what the problem was - I hope you have taken heed of the advice and doing both gaskets while you have it apart!

Hi again...advice followed..both heads off...took some shifting with a very long bar (1.5 metres long) ...original gaskets with ERR ref on them...I was amazed by the amount of debris that I found under the intake manifold..Is this normal ? i.e. been seen before.

The amount of crud under the intake manifold is a little strange, but as the manifold sits as a bridge over the valley, it can be a trap, although I am very surprised by the amount and size of crap found under yours!

On the THOR engines, the front of the valley is well masked by the alternator and air con pump, so I am surprised there is that much much under there and I would not say it is a common thing to happen, as it is, as I say above, quite well shielded with engine ancillaries!

Looks to me like some little critter was making a home under the manifold.

Hi..more advice please... I received the head gasket set today...included are 16 joints ..where do they go...are they required for the thor engine?..the only place they may fit is in the cup of block around the top of the hydraulic tappet..if so do they sit there or does the valley gasket hold them in place...There were no joints like this when I took off the inlet manifolds.
Also re head gaskets...they are not marked re top, but at each end is a red line, does this fave upwards towards the head.
The heads are now at machine shop being pressure tested and skimmed.

Do you have the part number of your gasket set so we may look at any details available?

Thankyou....Obviously with a kit they include parts for numerous engines.

Back again..update.. Pressure test reveals no probs with heads...but...both heads deformed..i.e. machining required 0015 and 0035...hopefully no probs with tolerances between valves and pistons.
