Hi new to site...Whistling noise on pressing accelerator...In park and also in drive..if I lift foot off pedal noise disappears...changed so far..tensioner and belt, idler pulleys, alternator..all with brand new parts..today in desperation took off belt and revved engine..noise still there...The noise seems louder from right hand side of car.. no fault codes showing...Any suggestion would be helpful.
Regards

Yes sounds like its drawing in air somewhere, have a spray around with brake or carb cleaner and see if the revs pick up.

Hi..the sound is louder from under the right hand side of the car..perhaps sounds a little metallic...when driving sounds like a whistle.

Hi.. thanks again..I have recently loosened off the nuts from manifold to downpipe ( a little seized) and retightened (one by one) in preparation of fitting new cats as there were emission probs and I thought I could hear a rattle...perhaps I have disturbed something...the noise seems to be coming more from bottom where engine joins box but sounds travel...the car drives well and gears change well. car has done 140000 kms.
Regards

Perhaps you have, get the new cats fitted, hopefully that's your problem.

Hi. thanks for your interest and advice..awaiting delivery from U.K.. will keep you posted.
Kind regards
Hi again...I have now replaced cats and manifold gaskets to discover that it is the right hand head gasket...No longer whistling but a very loud noise.
May I ask... can I replace just the offending head gasket, and also is it obligatory to have the head skimmed.
Regards

It's common practice to have them skimmed and pressure checked for cracks. Can save a lot of disappointment to go through all that work/bolts and gaskets then to find yourself punching your own face!!:p:(;)

Yes you can just replace the whistling gasket BUT the other gasket will be very similar condition wise. Head skimming is only done if the head is warped. If your only doing one head and the heads not warped (ie no skim) you may get away with it. If you have to skim your better doing both tbh your better doing both anyway. Head is checked with an engineers straight edge and feelers. (Same with block) 2 thou is thought acceptable but I'd want 1 thou tbh.

+1. Engineer's edge is fine.

New stretch bolts for the head. Best to tighten in 2 stages overnight. Take your time. Give yourself 1 weekend to disassemble and order all the parts you break getting it apart (most likely the exhaust heat shields) and 1 weekend to reassemble and it'll be fine. Make sure you use only 6 point sockets on hexagonal bolts / nuts.

Hi everybody..thanks for the advice...Part of the right hand head gasket is protruding from between the head and block...will start dismantling tomorrow... have already ordered gasket set and stretch bolts....I live in Corsica... one mechanic says the engine is too complicated for him.... being lazy I asked the land rover agency for a quote....guess what ? ..3000 euros...
Will keep everyone posted on any developments.
Regards.

I would fly over and do it myself for that money.
