hi all new to here,

i have 2000 range rover dse auto,
the problems i have are, the engine overheats if i go over 70mph boils, then i have to let it cool and then its fine for an hour??
i have tested the usual, radiator, thermostat, head gasket etc.

it is really down on power, stays in the gears to long, and the slightest bit of a hill and i get overtaking by people on pushbikes!!!

i have spoke to few garages and looked at the this myself and they say the gearbox is at fault, it has gone into limp mode and therefore causing these problems.

i have worked on landys for years and never come across this problem, if anyone can help?? or has any other reasons its doing this, it would be a great help!!

many thanks

overheating injun is bad, regardless of gear box.If its overheated theres likely to be damge being done somewhere

If the engine overheats it will go into limp mode, if you keep overheating it the head will crack if it hasn't already. You need to get the fault codes read.
What tests have you done? How did you test the head gasket for example?
First check the viscous fan is working correctly, then take the stat out and see if it still overheats, if it doesn't overheat, re-test the stat in a pan of boiling water to make sure it opens fully, if a new stat is required also test that before fitting. Remove the water pump and check that all the impeller vanes are intact.
Remove and flush the rad, at the same time check the interior of the hoses have not delaminated.
If it still overheats after all that, suspect a cracked head:eek:

Hi all,

i have tested the thermostat, flushed the rad, had the head tested, new water pump, been through all the usual scenarios.
The hoses have been checked, no fault codes registered on dianogstics and viscous fan is fine, which is why this is troubling me so much.

thanks for your help

Cracked head is the most likely cause then. Very difficult to test, even a pressure test often doesn't show the fault, it needs heat and pressure off the car.

hi again,

if the head is gone would it affect the gearbox?

the access panel on the side was removed and the gearbox oil is browny orange in colour when it should be red, and smells burnt?

No, sorry you've got two problems.

You might want to try re-filling the geabox and running it for a couple of hundred miles then doing it again but it's more likely you're going to need a re-build or a recon box.

Head + box = ouch!

hi all,

ive flushed the rad twice for any sediment, checked the core and if there was any blocks in the fins but nothing there, could be both gone at the same time, just weird as they both ( overheating and gearbox ) started at the same time?
thanks again

It's the built in speed limiter. To ensure it's never driven illegally.:D:D:D

Check the RAD heats all over, there is a baffle in the top header so the water goes down one side and up the other, the baffle has been known to fail, if it does, the watar goes straight across the top of the rad so no cooling.
