Radiator explosion

Hi all

The plastic top on the radiator on my 2.5 DSE Rangie exploded today!

I take it that this particular radiator has had it now... anybody got one or know where I can get another at short notice?

Thanks for the reply. I'm a regular at Island 4x4 -- unfortunately they're closed now until the 2nd of Jan

Was wondering if anyone had a spare used one or knew of anywhere that might be open tomorrow

How about a decent autofactors like Unity or Camberly Auto Factors??

Mine burst last year in the same place. Seems a common problem.

Lasted 11 years.

Went for OEM as I have been told aftermarket ones don't last. Just grin and bear the cost.

When mine went I was in Almaty (Kazakstan) and had no chance of getting a new one so had to find someone who was willing to repair it.
I found a guy that made me up a new top tank out of an aluminium sheet for $200 us and have had no problems with it since and have done 10000 miles with it

Was his name Borat ?

pressure relief not working?

I think the plastic goes brittle with age.
The pressure relief valve is the expansion tank cap.

Yea not working proper and blew the fooker up......... If it was working right wont happen

Not wanting to spend too much on a replacement radiator because I had planned to sell it after Christmas

I would be happy to get an aftermarket one from Island 4x4 tomorrow if they were open...

You might take the **** out of people from Kazakhstan but i bet you could not find anyone in this country willing to build you and new radiator top tank for that type of money either but then again a new radiator here dosent cost that

You are right the lazy bastards in this country couldn't build a radiator for $200.

The next time mine goes I will order one from Kazakhstan.

The cap is set to relieve at 15 PSI and vent freely at around 20-22 PSI to prevent damage to the system. In around 1998-9 BMW recalled every vehicle fitted with the early cap as it was not doing the 20-22 PSI thing and causing damage. Don't think Range rover ever did that.

Sounds about right... although I've no idea why it would be designed with a plastic top anyway. Accountants got hold of it probably!

Is there another way to have it. If cap is not venting it will cause a problem.

Mine exploded because the plastic failed but to make matters worse I was climbing a steep hill at above 3000 meters so the boiling point of water was much lower and when the hole appeared the water immediately went to superheated steam and nearly punched a hole in the bonnet . as a temporay fix i used Epoxy and didnt tighten the cap it got me to the repair shop and 24 hrs later it had a new top on it.
For a temp repair you might use Epoxy resin but it wont last long
