300tdi no fan?

Morning,

am i missing something? my 110 (new to me) doesn't have a fan, either viscous or electric? i know my mate who had it before replaced the radiator but should it have a fan?

and is the radiator a combined water and oil radiator? its got a big intercooler in front of it so i assume this will help with warming the heater up during winter.

It should have a fan, but people often run without it, and will get away with it if they don't tow or climb mountains.
The radiator is full of water and antifreeze, but has a separate oil cooler within it, fed from an adaptor on the oil filter housing which has a small wax stat in it.
I think that is an aftermarket intercooler, but not sure exactly what a 300Tdi had as standard.

ah, thankyou for the confirmation, i know some cars don't bother because they have such a large amount of water and a big radiator. i don't tow and don't do a lot of offroad so i'll probably be okay. i'll maybe look at an aftermarket electric kit and thermostat just for extra safety when the weather warms up.

I would go with the viscous fan, with or without cowl. My experiences of Electric fans on Landrovers haven't been all that good.

does the viscous coupling just screw onto that threaded part in the middle of the pulley in the photo?? cheers

Yes. You can buy a special cranked spanner to put it on and remove it. They are only a few quid, and do make the job a bit easier.

I snapped mine while wading in water.. never put one back on.. it just works and doesn't over heat..

cool. to be fair the temp guage never seems to go above halfway and the heater is nice and warm when its on full belt

Yeah like said if you're sat still on the motorway etc in traffic, then I would get one because there's no airflow going through to cool it down. I do notice when I'm sat still in traffic the temp goes up

You have to be careful of the 300 as when they get hot they get hot real quick.
The gauge is not linear, ie when it says it is to hot it could be to late.
I would fit a fan of some description, even if you never need it you have it.

I wouldn't go without a fan, asking for trouble. Ask your mate what he did with it. I wonder if the Aftermarket intercooler makes the rad sit a bit further back and therefore interfere with the fan.
You will need the fan, viscous coupling and the fan shroud.

Oh, temp gauge is just a vague indication of what's going on. Check thermostat also or even fit a new good quality one.

asked him, he said it was never on there when he changed the radiator. might be that its tight for space as well. he reckons they sap engine power as well. might plump for an electric one

I have an after market water temp sensor and the temp gauge on the dash doesn't move at all before 106 degrees C

the aircon fans get activated automatically at 96 degrees C

the dash gauge gets to the "normal " position at 60 degrees C

It will sap no power, viscous fan only really works when it needs to.
Get 2nd hand cowl and fan and a new coupling.

Normally there is an intercooler that fills the gap on the left of your picture.
If the intercooler is in front of the radiator it is an aftermerket unit.
A full width intercooler is a good thing.
I probably won't do much in heating up the heater in winter.
Yes the new radiator you have is a combined water and oil cooler, the oil section is on the right of your photo.

I (as others have) would reccomend you get a cowl and a vicous coupling and fan.
Couplings are around the £40 mark and a fan around £30.

cheers for the info, i'm going to have to measure the clearance between the rad and the fan to see if a viscous and cowl will fit just in case its been spaced back at all.

Looks normal to me. The rad sits in a frame and the frame sits on some rubber bushes which sit on some pins on two raised brackets on the front X-member.
The frame sits flush with the back edge of the front X-member, as yours does in the picture.

Take the grill off and post a picture of the front of the car.
