O.K. calm down you lot, nothing kinky.
Just wanted to know if you can get radiator muffs to fit a Disco' II.
I went off roading about 6mths back and despite several cleaning sessions of the engine bay, I still haven't got rid of all the mud / strands of grass etc.
Can't help thinking a radiator muff will help keep the shoite out of my engine bay.
If there aint any about, I might get some leatherette from Dunelm and get the mrs to knock one up.

Stu.

Well, well they still make them do they. I made my own for my old 3.5 a bit of cardboard inside a back bin bag and duck tape and cable ties, job done. Don't need one for the 3.9.

U dont say what engine u have.

But aren't rad muffs for petrol engines, blocking off the rad on a diesel also blocks cold air going to the intercooler which I believe is an important part of a diesel disco's engine, but then what do I know about diesels,, nout.

I made me own ...

Bit of rubber ... holes cut in for bonnet catch, run the bottom end between the plastic of the bumper and the bumper itself, lift the bonnet and put the top over it ... works well.

I'll take a couple of pics to show how it's fitted tomorrow.

I have just made one for mine to!! specifically for when swimming in the goo not so much for temp, but Im sure it will work for that as well.........will post some piccies morrow when its all fitted back on....:)

It's a TD5. I don't want the muff for temp, I only want it for wading. Might keep some of the shoite out of me engine bay and stop the rad from getting clogged up with flotsam and jetsam.
I intend to make it like the old series muffs, so I can leave it on and just roll it up when I don't need it.

Tiz easy - between the front valance and radiator is a rubber seal. Just slide an ali panel down there. Thats what i have done. A small lip on the top and you can slide it in and lift it out as often as you need to.

I do think these comments are slightly funny - allow me to explain.

I am very much an advocate of taking the viscous fan of Discos. However I would never suggest that if offroading alot, as you are predominantly travelling at low speeds, therefore little chance of unforced air, therefore possible overheat.

Now I appreciate that the op's motivation is not to control temps but to stop muck entering the rad/engine area. However, when fitting a blind such as have been illustrated, any airflow - fan assisted or otherwise - will be completely stopped.

So, you have slow speeds, lower gears, the possibility of higher revs when climbing steep rises, and you want to block off any cooling airflow????

I can see how it would work if you only had the blind in place when wading, as you will be going on relatively flat ground (albeit underwater!!) therefore not demanding too much from your engines and for relatively short periods. But do all you "muff users" take them off again, immediately after wading???

Just wanting to sound opinion you understand, not telling you guys what to do..............................................:D:D:D

yes - i do - the advantage of a plate is that yu can insert it, drive across??? (under/through) any water and remove it immediately afterwards.

It's a 10 second job to fit, and quicker to remove!!

Though I left it on for all day yesterday, that was ~60+ miles of pretty hard laning then ~250+ miles of mostly motorway, and never moved the temp gauge needle .. at all!!

Whatever, personal choice ... my wading plugs are still in too ... ;)

I only intend utilising the muff whilst wading, got to be better than overheating due to a mud filled radiator.
I can't see how it'd overheat with the muff on anyhow. Surely the fan will pull air through the rad from the grille below the bumper?

I could do the sensible thing and just drive around the water, but then where's the fun in that.

I agree, swimming is fun, but mud filled rad is not!!

Well here shes is back on, not the best pictures in the world, but give you some idea. Its permanently fitted to the top of the grille, and along the bottom with turnbuckle fasteners, Because I have light guards I fitted it under the mounts for those as well.

when wanted you simple unroll it and clip the bottom to the trim fasteners and vice versa when finished, just roll it up and secure with straps. Has a velcro strip each side as well, not bad for Mk1 version I thought.....:D was difficult to remember how to sew / thread a sewing machine tho

Awesome!
That's exactly the same thing I had in mind. I like the mesh idea to support the muff when it's rolled down, hadn't thought of that.
Think I'll get the mrs to do the sewing though.
Great pic's, thank you.
Just a couple of Q's, do you fit yours in front of the radiator grille, or did you remove the grille to fit the muff?
How did you construct the frame and fix the mesh to it?

Thanks again!

The mesh is part of the grille, its a Factory "saudi" grille, thats how they are. The grille was removed to nut and bolt the fixings on and to make it easier for the measurements etc.
