quick swap cubby box/middle seat?

Morning all,
tis my birthday today and my bro wants to get me a cubby box to replace the middle seat, only thing I'm worried about is if for some reason I need to use the middle seat, how easy would it be to swap back, and would it be the sort of thing you could swap out for a journey or is it quite involved? I'd really appreciated the arm rest/cup holder for the majority of journeys that don't need the middle seat. Maybe I could have some sort of quick release pin system?

seats are bolted in....and so are cubby boxes so its gonna be a pain in the ass to keep swappin....

Are they the same bolts/bolt holes?

It depends which cubby box you go for. My Mobile storage solutions one has different holes at the front as it uses a brace bar to make it harder to rip out.

quick release Avdel pins or Dzus bolts?

I'd just stick the cubby box in as when are you going to need the middle seat??? Do you regularly transport midgets??

hmmm, all depends on the price really, but Dzus bolts seem to be pretty reasonable. Would they really be strong enough to hold the seat down though?

Not sure I'd be happy using either of those fitting to secure a seat down though

I admit, the middle seat is close to useless. But we are going on mtb trips soon and I might need the extra seat, although I think I might just put 2 benches in the back instead of the 1 I was planning on. Shouldn't need to put stuff in the back on the trips cos bikes are gonna go on the roof and bags and stuff will be on roofrack too.

Screw it, I'll just keep the middle seat in case I get a midget friend!!

they are fine, Pikey - they are used in more critical applications than seats.

the trick is to use them in shear, not tension.

ie dont use them to bolt the seat down, but fit angle brackets and bolt through the bracket and the seat - horizontally.

having said that - lots of racing car panels are held in place by both of those systems directly.

Im in the same dilema. I was thinking of bolting my cubby box to an old seat base and that way i could just pull it out and clip in seat base and visa-versa. Anyone tried it this way?

On my old landy I made my own cubby box and attatched steel bars to the underside and rear to enable me to clip it into the seat fixings both front and rear. I then used slide bolts that were offset (like on toilet doors) to stop it flying in an accident. The bolts stopped the front fastenings being able to lift out the hole. It took all of 10 seconds to remove and replace the seat base.
