I am looking at purchasing an ex mod defender, the seller informs me that:

'it has not been run as a result of a lack of distributor, leads and coil'

Is this a serious problem to fix?

Are the parts expensive?

Regards,

Stu.

:D :D :D

It's no big deal really. They're all basic ignition components, only the distributor is an involved(ish) job to fit, to get the timing right.

Might even just be the dizzy cap that's gone if you;re lucky, and he was wrong.

Ex MOD V8 then? What is it, a Rapier? :)

The distributor is a long splined shaft which runs off the camshaft. It turns a contactor called a rotor arm, which touches metal points on the inside of the distributor cap which are connected to leads to each of the cylinders, which are connected to spark plugs which make it fire in a given sequence.

It's not a big job, and only requires basic tools but it does have to be set up right to get the thing firing properly, so best either learn about it, or get someone who does know to do it. :)

It's alright buddy, that was just my sick sense of humour.

Yeah it looks like a good project. Might be a bit of a handfull if you've never really touched a car though. But most of the work seems to be pretty straightforward.

Would still want a good look around it though, since I bet it's led a tough life.

When he gets it done, go on holiday to north Ireland

If your asking what these parts are, may i suggest that this is not the vehicle for you....

It looks like it needs a fair bit of work .From what I`ve seen snatch 110`s are a fair bit heavier than standard GS 110`s because of the armour - not sure if this one has power steering, but in any event heavier car equals slower equals less mpg. I wouldn`t have one as a first Land Rover, and you won`t be able to test drive it to find out if you could get on with it. The Ex Military Land Rover Association might be a good source of advice, but with all due respect, your question suggests to me that you might be better off with a more standard LR product potentially needing less work. I would hate you to be put off LR`s because of buying one that wasn`t suitable for you

more of a show vehicle if restored than run about, 4.5 ton ,salisbury front and back std 3.5 l/c v8 ,lt 85 gearbox prone for 1st /2nd selector fork wear as the army in NI told me driven alot in 2nd,used to work at a place that restored them for mod ,hobsons (01507 343 401 )

I agree with the comments about this not being the ideal vehicle for someone with possibily little mechanical knowledge.
There will be some (many) specialised parts on this vehicle (or not on it if they are missing!) and you aren't going to get them from your local dealer, if you think sourcing a dizzy, coil & leads seems a problem then you haven't seen anything yet.

Start with something more basic and work up to a specialised piece of kit like this.

Have you driven one?

The motor is great but not all were fitted with power steering. They are a bit of a bitch to drive being so heavy (top heavy as well), so I would think twice before buying if you want to use it as a run around. That is, unless, you are off to Libya!
