Hi people,
I recently purchased a p38 2.5 diesel and so far its been great! Touch wood!
Anyway in my quest for a few extra horses and torques i popped the bonnet to check the air filter wasnt blocked. I discovered a k&n panel filter that was fairly clean. I also noticed a shiny blue box sat in the top right hand corner of the engine bay. On closer inspection it is a psi motorsport box a vp power one. The thing is ive researched these everywhere and cant get a definitive answer as to how, specifically, the vp power box works. Anyone who has one please enlighten me as my power delivery is a bit all over the place. Ive read that some are adjustable by a screw some by an elaborate pin system i cant understand!
Please help
Dan

Any tuning boxes work the same way. They trick the engine into running rich. If it is all over the place then it is probably installed badly. Don't quest for too much power/torque as the gearbox is close to the limit on torque out of the factory.

If the K&N is oiled, get rid of it. They have a tendency to coat the MAF which causes the engine to lean off, which in a turbo engine is a bad thing. You're better with a new standard filter. There is no appreciable power gain from K&N filters and the cost of the cleaning products is usually more than a standard filter.

Ahh right ok. Thanks ill have to check the filter i assume if i touch it ill know if its been oiled? I had a maf problem on my old golf turbo which i managed to clean up with a carburetor cleaning spray if i remember right. Not sure this is that problem though i think its the box not set correctly im going to take the front of it off today if i remember to get photos I'll post them on here.
Thanks

No problem if it's a manual gearbox.:)

I couldn't possibly comment...

So in my case the MAF is doing **** all since I blocked the EGR.

That's about the size of it. MAF is there to measure air flow so that the ECU knows how much exhaust gas is being ingested. Diesels are throttled by fuel not air. Although a none functioning MAF can lead to the ECU getting confused reference air conditions.

Ok so i opened the box i took photos of inside but apparently they are too large of a file to upload. Inside essentially is a small brass flat headed screw and a sort of plastic cross head adjuster thing! ( the type of thing that adjusts old boiler thermostats between 12 and 24 hour mode) i had read somewhere that if you turn the screw you turn up the power, sounds too easy! But i turned it anyway one complete turn to the right. I put it loosely back together and took the car for a blart around the block. I might be kidding myself but it felt like a different engine. Pulled lovely from right down low all the way to 60 ish, Time will tell on whether its more efficiant or not but im quite pleased and its so easy to tweak i think i might be tweaking with it some more next weekend. Oh and my air filter certainly feels dry so im ruling that out.

PSI VP should not be fitted to a P38 they are specifically for the VP44 pump. Your pump is a VP37. According to the PSI web site bumf.

Really?! I assume you mean fuel pump? Mine is the later engine i have been told. With the plastic inlet. Not the metal one. Is this still the case where could i check the number of the pump?
Many thanks

Yes really. No P38 is fitted with the VP44 injection pump. Part number is stamped on the side of the pump. Should be 0460406994. That is a VE EDC pump otherwise known as a VP37. Look at PSI web site. Same pump is fitted to all P38s non EGR (alloy manifold) and EGR (plastic manifold).

Ok well the number on the side of the box is 200008 which matches what the website recommends for a 2000 p38 mine is december 1999 with egr. So i think it is right just not sure why it has vp power written on it. Also i noticed mine has quite a chunky almost obd style plug in the bottom which doesnt match any of the boxes on psi's website.
The plot thickens!!

Many have battled Wammers on Tech and Diesel stuff....few have ever won....

If The Wammer says it is not the right box, I'd pretty much take his word on it!

The VP Power Box is for the later VP44 pump, the PSI PowerBox is for the VP37....

Does yours have PSI motorsport on the front or VPpower by PSI ??

It says vp power by psi motorsport.

Im not trying to battle anyone by the way just trying to get to the bottom of what is actually on my car!!

Arrrrggghh

It is possibly just a standard power box. Yes there are two versions for the P38 pre EGR and post EGR. Because they have different ECUs. They basically tell the ECU that the preset fuel level for any given throttle setting has not been reached, this tricks the ECU into giving more fuel within the modified map settings in the power box. .Personally i would not play with it, normal driving should give little problems but if you boot it about like you stole it you WILL use more fuel. A lot of towing with the extra torque may see your gearbox out.
