Looking for some advice on the following;

I have recently purchased a 2002 TD4 3dr Serengeti and the Propshaft is Removed.

At this stage I have no idea why, my initial thoughts were that it had simply been faulty and the previous keeper removed it rather than replacing it, however I don't know if this is the case, I have read through numerous threads stating that it is better on fuel etc if removed so this may also be the case??

However as I would rather it was a 4wd I was looking at just picking up another complete prop from the breakers and fitting it.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this before I do it?

Should I be checking something else 1st just in case I am wasting my money fitting the Propshaft that I may then just have to remove again?

Also would any Freelander Propshaft fit or are there different ones?

TIA

This is one of the most commonly asked questions. Normally the props are removed to hide IRD damage, caused by a stiff VCU. There is no meaningful fuel economy increase from prop removal. Removal is normally done so the vehicle can still be driven with a failing IRD. So before even deciding to fit another set of props, a full investigation into the viability of the IRD and rear diff needs to be carried out.

If I remember rightly check the oil in the ird and if it is grey then you may well have a problem with the ird

Correct. Grey oil in the IRD is a sure sign of bearing damage. If the oil is black or dark brown, then the IRD is likely to be OK. ;)

I can vouch for you do not get any extra miles to the gallon (old mesurments) with the prop off I had mine off for two weeks because of the support bearings and I used the same amount of fuel for the same mileage .

If you're lucky the propshaft was removed because the support bearings were shot and the PO was too miserable to pay for them to be replaced.
If you do try fitting a 2nd hand prop they are all the same size but be prepared to buy new support bearings, new rear diff supports and a new VCU because the one from the scrappy will probably be locked solid. After fitting do the one wheel up test to confirm. Google it if you never heard of it.
