Hi, does the prop shaft on a freelander do perfectly straight from the IRD to the rear diff? ie. straight line.

Only reason i ask is when my car was lifted to have it's oil changed at the service, standing at the back, i noticed the prop shaft seems to come out of the ird, go to the VCU, which seems a little offset to the right then back to the diff.

Presumably i should get that looked at asap? :)

you have a prop shaft so it doesnt have to run in straight line ,qas long as carrier bearings are 90 degrees to shaft its all okay

as James says its perfectly normal as VCU is offset from centre of car due to exhaust and also IRD being off centre due to gearbox. As diff is central the rear prop comes off the VCU at an angle to compensate.

Yeah, after 8 years i've found out. Strangely enough, despite all that's gone wrong, it's always got me home and never left me in the lurch...

Also having a chat with the mechanic who was doing the oil, we got onto the topic of VCUs and how they are usually changed around 70,000miles.....i said mine had been on since new - 129,000miles - his response? Well,if it's not giving you problems don't touch it :D
