Nah, it's just black Hammerite, goes on really well and seems to be quite flexible still so hoping it can withstand some abuse lol
Heard mixed reports about Hammerite chipping and coming off fairly easily.
Could be the usual case of that you never hear about the successes, just the failures.
 
I just popped outside to empty the vacuum and needed to put a hat and coat on :(

I brought it back with me on my way home last night, bloody clouds followed me all the way from March to Portsmouth :eek:
Slowly mate out of gas both physically and metaphorically! I am really struggling with d1 motivation. It’s not going anywhere so I can get on it again when I do. Doing a bit more on fender which will prob spur me on to do d1
Advice please. what are the advantages/disadvantages of using flux cored wire rather than gas. I ask because Lidl are flogging a "flux cored wire welder" at at remarkably advantageous price (£79.99), there seems to be no facility to attach a gas bottle to the kit.

Gas is betterer. Less clag and more versatile
 
Thanks. I want to make it as straightforward as possible as I have no skill yet.

You’ll find gas more consistent mate. I wouldn’t go pure co2 either - get some argon mix and your welds will he clean. Prep, cleaning, lining up and gapping is everything. The weld itself takes a minute. The prep is the long bit. Let us know how you get on

I hate the stuff after using it in our yard for a bucket repair, might as well have used the stick welder, would have welded better too I recon, it's OK as a hobby welder for an old wrought iron gate or some such but you won't get good results on thin sheet and especially if you're fresh to welding then I wouldn't bother as you won't already know what your own shortfalls are and how to compensate for inconsistencies yet.

Buy a half tidy 130A gas mig and get your gas rent free from Adams gas and rock and roll.

I used to use pub gas for my mig welding before, never had porosity but the CO2 chills the weld pool I found and you can end up with a lack of fusion on thin stuff with low amps/heat, high heat and it's golden.

Prep is 95% of welding.

Progress is slow but Rome was not built in a day, so I keep telling myself at least, it makes me feel better :eek:

But I did get out there and have a go....

Ground back the surface rust and fit up the plate, needed a little extra trimming but it verks!

Not one to get an easy life of things I ended up having to cut out the floor brace that I had made previously that the rear brake line runs through so I've had to re-make that and will get that welded in at some point and the union had seized on the brake bias valve to joint pipe so more 3/16ths cunnifer pipe ordered to re-make that, so I managed to do my usual and have a make work moment lol

Should be back on it for an hour or so tomorrow night and I think I am going to crack out my stick welder for a go, like the mig but the box section is 3.6mm so it will withstand some amps and some 2mm rods for what I have planned.

Need to get that bit of chassis sorted next and then I can get on with rebuilding more of the back end.

Loads to do still.
 
I have been out and made that little bracket for the floor support and even drilled it out for the brake line and the cable clip that goes on the end, welder decided today was the day to alert me to the liner having worn through and my 2mm stick welding rods have eloped with the spare liner, probably going to find that they have been a breeding and made me some TIG tungstens while they were away :rolleyes:

Me bit of 1.5mm plate out the scrap pot.

Marked up with the angle gauge and trimmed to fit, it just needed to be folded on one end and drilled for the necessary, I likes a step drill for these tasks as they make life so much easier than pilots and staged drilling with progressive bits to the size required.

7/16ths for the brake union and 1/4 for the cable clip.

Blathered it in red and left to dry until tomoz when I get some rods or find the liner, probably going to sell a kidney an get some 2mm rods in Halfrauds :(

Spent the rest of the night feckin around trying to remember how I made such nice flares on my brake lines previously, hell if I know but I did get to sit on the couch doing it so not all bad I suppose :)

The new 2mm welding rods are a bit of a let down straight out the box but I am going to cook some up in the oven for a second bite of the cherry, not much happened, spent too much time stripping the old liner out the torch and fettling bits and bobs as well as looking for my marbles :oops:

Starting to get me down again as yet another weekend passes and it's not really any closer to being done, long drive up country again tomorrow to fetch Mrs dieseldog and puppy dieseldog so it seems I'll have a bit of time to dwell on it.

Anyhoo..............

Just look at a good bit. It makes you think of the happy times. We are all here to help with moral. Which when builds are not going your way disappears quickly.
Them sticks must be really damp if your putting them in the oven. Grind a tip off see if they spark up.

( Plus kids love classic cars that the parents are still building ;))
 
Write up from above pics, refuse to pay £30 EACH for new brake pipes.:mad::mad: **** takers.

So made up my own new brake lines, Caliper to Flexi. 3/16 in Kunifer (Cupro / Nickel)
Had not used Kunfier before always used copper, but did notice the difference much stiffer when flaring.
Replaced the Fexi's with Stainless steel braided hoses, with new stainless bleed nipples* and covers for callipers (*lubed of course)
Bled up perfectly no trouble, used Brembo 5.1 fluid, did a full front flush, rears still to do.

Front flexi to calliper Pipes were very corroded, good news is the main pipes from brake valve / master cylinder ok for now but will be replacing sooner or later.

Also noticed my clutch fluid needs changing, (to say the least see the reading on fluid tester) so making up new clutch line from flexi to slave cylinder in 1/4 kunifer, will be replacing salve cylinder and all fluid at same time.

It's getting old fast trying to work on it around being courteous to neighbours with small kids and having one myself and the poxy weather.

Really wanted to have had it done and a fresh new patio laid so we could actually enjoy the space and not just work in it with a welder and a grinder.

I've been scouring the interwebs for a unit again tonight, nothing yet, but you never know.

The rods spark up but they are not what I usually buy and the flux seemed to be very odd in the way it engulfed the weld pool which made me think that they need to be dried off so that the flux can do it's thing properly.
 
I’m exactly the same mate. Yesterday I woke up to the typical racket. Thought why the fcuk do I live here when I like peace and packed the truck and dog and disappeared until nighttime. One day eh. I want to move now but got a bit to do to house and 2 lr to build first.

I wanna live in the middle of feckin nowhere with no one anywhere near me so I can build a shed and play welders to my hearts content and when I've had enough, close the door and sit on the nice swanky patio with a white wine spritzer and a smoked salmon bagel to enjoy some down time.

I did my 400+ mile round trip to go fetch the Mrs an the kids, the furry feckers were happier to see me than the sprogladite :oops: WTF :rolleyes:

On my merry travels I looked up Machine Mart and there was one just 5 minutes off the motorway, quick detour and I got two more liners which means I am bound to find the spare liner and the welding rods in the next few days lol :oops:

Should be back on it at least one night this week and get a bit more done, really need to get a whole weekend on it and make it ready to roll for the bank holiday weekend but wee shall see, if I hit a full 12 months on this then I'm going to be pizzed.
