Hats off to you for devoting your time to something practical, rather than spending all day in front of that daft box with moving pictures ;) ... Gotta be good for your back - keeping moving .... I know I have to - even with physio and Osteo most weeks ( ) .... still need to keep moving or I seize up .....

And.... regarding the cable ties .... yep, me too  ..... :D

Properly fused is a fine idea too --- years ago we had a fire on a digger caused by no fuses - it took the batteries out, the alternator out, the heater plug out ..... and the throttle stepper motor too :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: !!! .... I spent a week re-wiring the thing, and guess what .... it's now got a fuse box  :)

Bless u and many thks, nice to hear I’m doing something right for a change

Indeed I’ve just done as much as I can then stopped when my back begins to burn or I feel sick with the pain

Ah yes fuses , I had a series 3 , driving down Orpington high street I started to see white smoke from behind the dashboard , managed to pull over in time and get the battery leads off, towed home and the entire dashboard ooom was knackered

Removed it and slowly rebuilt an entirely new dashboard loom on my kitchen table as I couldn’t afford a loom from a company , just took it one wire at a time

So here’s a few items planned

Fuse boxes in my upper glove box for ancillaries, will have switched lives and aux battery lives

So my aux power doesn’t stay on all the time when I switch the engine off going to use a relay for that

Fuse box is split into 3 x sections so u can build it as u wish

It’s taken me since last year working things out, where to buy bits etc

Dashcam clip is in the planning process, company is modifying the 3D printed clip to fit better

Hopefully I haven’t made it very boring and may be of interest , if so will keep the thread going

Also wished to say a massive thks for the help behind the scenes from many members

Any links, info etc as always don’t hesitate to ask

Thks as always

Planning the gauges to fit as above

Proposed installation of fuse boxes

Left , trigger wire from my main fuse box
Middle fuse box
RH is my earth block

Fuse box will go off when my ign is turned off, but gains power from my aux battery

Ie

Hard wire for dashcam
Aux battery volts on gauge

Gauge panel is just there to hold the glove box up and whilst I also mess around with the gauge positions , finally gauges to be fitted as earlier pics

Where it says Display unit , positive wire will go to that middle fuse box as a live , fuse box will only be supplying around 10-15 amps max,

Does it ever go anywhere though, it’s always in bits

The only time it was off the road was when I done my suspension , apart from that I plan ahead as much as a can and do the work over a few days so can still use it , must admit I haven’t been able to do much since Xmas but feel I’m slowly being able to do little bits at a time without pushing my luck with my back

Plus u know u like the threads really , lol

Thread watched, it's about time!:p:D

I think you're gonna have one of the most sorted, well maintained D3s in the country

yeh right , lol

Must admit Started getting bits last year , then taking months planning ahead as much as I can

Hope I don’t make the thread too boring , just thought everyone else has a thread and felt left out , lol

Plus don’t mind being the guinea pig

^^^ OM*G !! I think you've missed an extra you could fit .... :D - though, for the moment, I can't think what it might be :D:D

Lol, :)

Must admit when I bought it 3 x years ago I knew it was going to be a project , alas though as I put one thing right it opened another can of worms where previous owners tried to cut corners

Have done so far

Rebuild entire suspension system
All timing belts , aux belt, oil pump cover , back fuel pump
Fitted front electric seats
Upgraded steering wheel to a D4 one inc the D4 steering wheel stalks
Set of new tyres , cooper at3
Dual batteries

Also really hope that I don’t make this thread boring as hell, but just sharing the upcoming projects in the pipeline :)

But know at the end if the day couldnt have got this far without a lot of help

Pick brains time please and I never mind admitting when I’ve dropped a clanger

The combined 3.5mm / usb socket in that lower panel

It has premade plugs on the back, will cut the 3.5mm one off and connect it properly into the terminal connector on the back of my radio for an AUX supply

Will also cut off the usb connector plug off and was going to run that to my switched 12v supply , however I need to drop it to 5v , because it will be too much for charging phones etc

Won’t need the data cables just the pos and neg

Been looking at voltage step down boxes but can’t find any and wondering if anyone knows some please

Apologises for the daft questions but seeing I’m so good at asking them it seems a shame to break the habit, snigger

Thks

As a side note , I found using a vacuum gauge was an excellent way to test valve blocks , to ensure the seals are sound and not letting by

Will also use it to track down a leak in my AC system

Also found the following items invaluable which I hope helps

I've got less than no idea about all this caper, but could you cannibalise one of these?

Thks buddy , now there’s a thought , think I do have a couple somewhere , so assume there’s a circuit board inside then that drops the voltage

Here’s the one I bought , typical when things should be easy, lol

Thought a better pic would make my rambling easier to understand

Just thought , if I plug that usb into a 12volt supply I could always use a multimeter couldnt I to double check what the output is , lol

Have a spare 12 v battery outside

Thks so much once again

Do hope this thread wont drive everyone nuts, lol

Engine oil and fuel filter turned up today , bought 10 x litres as it was more cost effective than 6 x litres

Also enclosed fuel filter instructions so may help others in the future, made sure it was a decent one as heard so many stories of cheap fuel filters causing issues
