Today's my birthday and my lovely fiance has bought me a snorkel :D So I unwrapped it all this morning and it is a Bearmach BA 2124A (all metal jobbie) designed for 2.5TD/200TDi.

The first step of the instructions say to remove the plastic grill from the outside of the wing but my 2.5TD doesn't have any grills on the wing!!!

Has anyone else fitted one of these and if so how?

Cheers

Richard

P.S. My parents are coming round later with an aluminium 3 piece steering guard too - what a great birthday I'm having :D

where's the air intake on your td?

I know it's on the passenger wing on a 200tdi, drivers wing on a 300tdi and TD5 but aint got a clue where it is on a td. Follow the intake pipe to your air filter.

It may be you need to sack the fiancee for getting you the wrong one;):p:p:p

Hmmmm...

Well after a bit of research it looks like somebody has changed the n/s front wing of my Landy at some time and fitted a V8 or NA one without the vent  The air intake is currently in the n/s of the engine bay tucked up near the heater box.

So... my options are...

1. Cut out a hole in the wing the same shape as what should be there and then fit as it should do.

2. Change the wing for a proper one from a TD and get it resprayed to match etc etc.

3. Forget about the snorkel idea and return it for a refund.

I'm off out to the garage for a nosy in a bit but I think it will be option 1 :D Wish me luck!

Cheers

Richard

I believe the TD and N/A both have solid wings with no vents. When they say TD they may be generic in thinking "200tdi is a Turbo Diesel" hence TD. How does the snorkel fit? Is it like a safari where a solid piece of tube goes through the wing into the box? Or does the snorkel face just fit flush to the wing with an expected flush fitting the other side?

reason i ask is that yours wont have the fitting the other side so manufacturing this to a tight tolerence will be difficult. If its just the pipework, then a hole the same size of the tube can be drilled and the mount holes drilled and fix it all up running the tube direct to the air intake.

This will be the best method to ensure a good seal. Always remember this when fitting a snorkel. There is no point bodging it if its not going to form an excellent seal. You need to get this right 1st time, dont dick about. it needs to be sealed from top of snorkel to air intake with no gaps. make sure you use sealant and hose clips on any pipework.

Good luck

Option 4. Take it back for a refund and get one of these...

Southdown 4 x 4 Raised Air intakes, Snorkels

They dunt go through the wing side, they go through the top (so you don't catch the snorklel on roadside debris too!) - MUCH neater. You can just get the moulded plastic bit that goes though the top for about £12 (i think) and make yer own! Jobs a goodun and you don't destroy the sleek aerodynamic lines of the defender to boot!

You should have an air intake on the side of the wing if it's a td. Mine has.

if there is no wing vent will the air intake plastic shaped bit that normally sits behind this vent still be there?on mine i removed the plastic piece and pipe,i had a plate welded to the back of the snorkel with a tubular piece welded to it.i then run the air intake hose direct from air filter to the snorkel

Well I got there in the end :)

I managed to find a decent length of pipework (1.5m) and have run this from the bottom of the original snorkel's rubber hose, through a round hole I cutout from the wing (finished with proper edging so it still looks decent and won't rub!) and direct to the airbox. I reckon this lack of connections should help minimise risk of water getting in anywhere.
