After getting my palls 3.5 V8i going last night we started having an argument about power outputs, my pall expected it to be about 200 bhp but I said it was closer to 150 (if he is lucky), dose anyone have a list of bhp and torque figures for the various disco engines? 200, 300tdi, 3.5, 3.5i, 3.9 ect.

Cheers

I don't have a list, but I can give some idea.

The ultra low CR version in the Stage 1 was around 90hp.

The normal "US" spec low CR 3.5 on twin carbs, as found in the Land Rover 90, MGB GT V8, Triumph TR8 and Range Rover was around 137hp and 187ft-lb

Slight variances as the LR units used Stromberg carbs instead of SU's.

The Rover SD1, TR7 V8 also on twin SU'd had 155hp.

The 3.5 EFI in the Disco and RR where 165hp and over 200ft-lb.

The 3.9 is iirc 182hp

If they want 200hp from a 3.5, this is possible. You'll want a good exhaust, intake, cam (maybe head work) and a good carb setup or EFI.

According to my book.
200 111.3bhp 195lb.ft.
3.5 144.5bhp 192lb.ft.
3.5i 163.6bhp 211.9lb.ft.
300 same as a 200 *unless it's edc*.
3.9 180bhp 230lb.ft *up to 1994*.
3.9 181.8bhp-231lb.ft *1994 onwards*.

Cheers guys, just about what I thought.

I figured my 200tdi with a big intercooler and tweaked pump and turbo would be pretty close to his V8i which has probably lost a few horses over the years (diesels don’t lose much), and with his auto box compared to my manual we could have a pretty competitive race going on. If we could find a nice field to race in that is, no point racing landy’s on the black stuff.

It would take a lot of expensive kit to get a 111bhp 200 tdi up to the 163bhp of a 3.5i even if your mates 3.5 is worn the bhp will still be high.
Anyway it's only numbers that the vehicle manufactures come up after testing a few "special" vehicles made just for that purpose.

And... an auto is quicker off the line than a manual :D

My tired old 3.5 with 33" tires, front and rear hd bumpers, sliders and tank guard, a winch and a **** load of recovery gear, coming all in at about 2500kg, it was still considerably quicker at the lights than a standard 300tdi on 32" tyres.

Sorry :D

I should think it could be close. You have quite a gearing advantage over the auto, although once past 60 or 70mph the V8 will keep on pulling better.

3.5 flew past me a few days ago on the M6 an I was doin about 85 :O

Only my mpg was still in double figures lol

I think 140bhp is doable without determent to reliability which at least brings it close to the 3.5. Well close enough for me to not see the point in buying a 3.5 anyway. If I had the money for the petrol I wouldn’t mind a 3.9 or larger but I make biodiesel so I would have to win the lottery to be worth going petrol.

had a 3.5 high compression engine from one of the old rover cars in a series years ago,you would need to spend alot of money on a diesel to keep up,i prefer plodding around in a TD and saving the cash these days..

I imported a tuned up Mazda RX7 a few years ago from Japan but got bored with it, 0-60 in a little over 4 seconds is of no use at all when you meet the car in front in a little less than 4 seconds!

I liked driving the Daihatsu Fourtrak that I had bought to tow the RX7 back from the dock much better.

Diesel is certainly a better all round power unit.

V8 is simply pleasure/indulgence motoring.

Im lucky not to have to drive mine everyday.

With the help and advice of 300bhp/ton I am now planning upgrade for my 3.5, which should be fun.

Will be nice to get it running more efficiently if anything! :)

Just been doing some work on my 3.5 RV8 powered TR7. It was blowing oil out of somewhere. Turned out to be a blocked flame trap on the breather and it was pushing oil out of the dip stick tube at high revs.

It now revs much more freely (hadn't notice how it had degraded so much). It just pulls and pulls from 3000rpm to 6000rpm without letting off at all. And it's still as pleasant in the lower rpms. I know the TR7 weighs only a fraction compared to a Landy, but I can still pull 5th at tickover (20mph or so) and it's as smooth as anything.

Cammed RV8's just drive so much better than stock ones. :D
