hi there,

ok well my disco is a little bit poorly and i have an idear of what i think is wrong but just wanted to check to see if you guys think the same as me.
it is a 1992 200tdi, ok well for starters it takes a good few attempts to start and then when it does start it just turns the sky grey with smoke out the eshust. you can also hear the tappets quite loudly but they do get a lot quiter when the engine has been running and is hot. o yeah the colder weather it is the harder it is 2 start.
i was wondering if you think i might have to replace anythink when i do the tappets? and i was thinking the starting issue was the glow plugs.
what do you guys think???

cheers dave!:)

Hi Dave, TDi 200's normally start really well, so somethings obviously not right.

Questions:

1. Is the battery good enough to turn it over effectively/fast enough?

2. Have you had a look at the glowplugs yet? Do you know that if done carefully, you can power each one up individually to check how quickly they glow red?

3. Have you checked/replaced the fuel filter? Have you checked/dismounted/cleaned the fuel sedimenter?

4. Have you checked the outside and inside of the turbo hoses?

Cheers
Dave

What tbl said, in that order ... ;)

Also make sure the battery earth strap is good.

the battery is fine, i have now done the tappet timing, (which made a differance to the engine when it is running) and i have also now changed the glow plugs which means it is starting first time now. but i still have the problem if grey/white smoke coming out the back (worste at start up) then just a little while running but gets thicker when i throttle on???

Hi there, if you have not changed the air filter, do so for another std paper air filter. The symptoms you describe are offten due to a clogged one.

Cheers

to be fair ive only had it a couple of months now. and ive had lots of large issues with is like one of the apprently new wheel bearings disinergrating. the transfer box being run with NO oil for at least the past 2 owners. need to get a full set of tyres as the MT on it have so little tred they are hardly legal! and lots of little stuff like rotten door seals(which is just annoying when offroading) but i have planned on doing but just not got round to it just yet with christmas and all, but next week hopfully.

it also still lags alot when cold at lower revs but when hot does not lag at all no matter what revs its at?? ive had a few suggestion like camshaft, head gasket etc.

When you say it lags do mean its slow to pick up ? We have come to the conclusion that they all do that when cold, especially the auto,s

yeah just slow to pick up at low revs, ok well that kinda good i suppose. mine is a manual.

ok well ill do the oil change and air filter next week and see what happens
cheers
