hi everybody this is my first time in deep snow in a p38 and must admit i am not impressed i live in queensbury bradford near the raggalds pub the one on all the weather forecasts and it just struggles with these conditions i also have a suzuki jeep which goes anywhere so am wondering if i am doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the p38

The only time my P38 has ever got stuck in snow is when I had leggy, almost bald road tyres on it. I use high range while in snow and use momentum to get through what I need to. Trying to stop is usually quite entertaining however.

You can't stop the signal.

Does the auto box not lock the converter up when using the manual gear selection on the box.

Never driven a manual P38, but was amazed how good my dhse was in the snow around this way. Especially using low range manual to creep down hills.

Manual Gear selection is in Low Box only with the Sport/Manual button pressed...

Manual Gear Selection on High Range i.e. with selector in position 2, the autobox will act normally i.e. from 1st but won't change up beyond 2nd...likewise if the selector is in position 3, the box will start in 1st but won't change up beyond 3rd.

Only true manual gear selection is in Low box, Sport/Manual button engaged...

Torque convertor locks in 3rd at about 40mph and top at 50 mph in Hi range.
Different in low range but can't remember the lock up points.
The only problem I have found with my DHSE is that it does not like to stop on ice or snow and the ABS is unhelpful. Again on some marques it is possible to turn off the ABS in snow as it will stop quicker.

Manual is easier in icy or snowy conditions as LR never added any auto box control for those conditions. Some marques have a snow & ice setting for the auto which selects 2nd gear for pull away and provides better engine braking.

That is because LR assumed the P38 could climb any mountain and ford any valley. In reallity if you tried to climb a mountain EAS would throw a fault and the BeCM would get wet while fording that valley leaving you stranded.

LR do advise the hammerhead mentality to offroad driving and just allow TC to sort it out.:screaming_bug_eye_f

Point and squirt whilst shouting POWER!!!!!

It was never designed for serious off roading IMO, it's an American highway cruiser.
TC is fecking useless, it only works for a very short time to stop the brakes overheating, but of course it was much cheaper than fitting LSD's or diff locks and LR do love cheap.

I found the TC most unhelpful... Indeed ABS was crud an makes a horrible noise to boot.

Used low range alot round here, probably where im getting confused i assume....

DHSE is just good, as it lacks the power to get you in trouble in the first place.... :p

Pretty much. It was the first vehicle designed for Jezza.

True enough. After the Classic LR pretty much gave up on making a serious offroader. Sure they still pumped out the Defender, but it is a 70 year old design. It has all been luxury motors to sooth your gout. Sure they can do some offroad duty, but they see less offroad action than your average hatchback.

It seems like wasted engeneering to me, might as well just go the Escalade path and make it a large limo that is as much use offroad as a chocolate fireguard.

I can't agree with that, the M51 has a tremendous amount of torque which is what unsticks wheels and a lot more power than any of my other 4 x 4's have had, certainly plenty to send you sliding to oblivion if used unwisely.

Wrong tyres and overly keen ABS. I prefer driving vehicles without electronic aids in the snow/ice as it is a lot easier to get going and stop again. I find the ABS in the P38 kicks in way too early. Long before you're at the threshold of breaking traction. This increase the braking distance way too much in any conditions, but is a lot more evident in the snow.
