Hi
I have poor brakes on my 1995 Disco (manual). they feel a bit spongy, don't have much feel to them and I have to press hard to pull up sharply.

I have just fitted new disc's pads and calipers as the old one were knackered.

(Incidentaly I got the lot from Paddocks and the calipers have 3 bleed nipples (my old ones had one) and two entry points for the brake pipes, so I blanked one off with another bleed nipple).

Expecting a big change, saddly no, they feel pretty much the same. I have tried braking with the engine off and they are worse which makes me think the servo is okay.

Any suggestions Thanks

Sounds like you have a 300tdi and they've sent 200 tdi calipers ...

As paul D above.
The 200s caipers have 3 nipples just like some early RRCs, the two rear nipples are bled as a pair the front/top one on it's own
Two entry points then that's two flexes required plus a T piece, your only using half of the caliper.
Send them back if u can.

Hi

Many thanks for the replies, it does indeed sound like Padocks have sent 200 tdi calipers.
I realised that there was something wrong with the wide selection of nipples plus the wrong hole sizes for the 2 fitting bolts and the pad retaining pins. After double checking Paddocks website I figured it was just one of those things with none Gen parts.

As the car was blocking my garage in bits I had to get it going so I reamered the holes to the correct sizes and built it up. Now that I know they are the wrong calipers with all this re-engineering I doubt Paddocks will have them back !

This leads me to the suggestion of a 'T' piece.
I assume that this is fitted after the flexy hose then two new metal pipes to the caliper ? does this sound correct, has anyone done this ? is it a success ? Or should I simply bite the bullet and buy two correct calipers

Thanks in advance Ian

Carry on with your ne calipers, the modification is done with twin flexies and a T piece on vented calipers also as they seem to be supplied with the 3 bleed nipples, and not only on LRs.

You may find a thread on fitting vented calipers on a disco on the www so just follow that.. your existing pipe into a T then the flexies and the short connection in to the caliper just like the original you had, a mirror image as thay say.:)

Some put a bridging pipe on the back of the caliper I believe, but how I haven't a clue :(

Again thanks for info.
The disc are solid (non-vented).
Does anyone have a picture of how the mod should look as I am unsure what I sould be aiming for.
Cheers Ian

Hi

Following on from excellent advice I have now converted the 200tdi calipers supplied to fit my 3oo tdi with new flexi's/pipes and a couple of T pieces.

I now have brakes that actually stop the vehicle rather than just slow it down.

However ! I have a spongy pedal that pumps up ! I have bled the buggers numerous times and there is no air in the system as far as I can tell (but there must be).
The olny thing I have not done is bleed the two middle nipples at the same time, I have done all 3 (or should that be 6) separatly.

Any suggestions ? I can;t think of how I could have got air into the rear system

Ian
