Under my disco with a rain mac!
Hi, Just joined and about to buy a disco 300 tdi tomorrow, just wanted to check if it is suppose to be permenant 4 wheel drive in high or low, or if it is suppose to be 2 wheel in the neutral position like a diahatsu sporttrak i own as the sticker is missing for the selection position?
If someone could just verify this for me before i part with my hard earned cash i would appreciate it!
Regards
Gary

They are permanent 4wd whether it's in hi or lo, if it is placed in the neutral position it won't go anywhere. You also have difflock if you move the hi/lo selector to the left of it's normal position.

All disco's are constant 4wd, and i *think* its the same for all defenders except for the very old series ones.

ohhh blyy ME....i didnt know that!....no wonder the poor thing works n sounds like raging bull ...very heavily build....built for the wild...but 2.5l 300tdi seems not enough....

If you are going to look at a 300tdi tomorrow and still asking questions like this, i would advise not to buy anything until you read more about discos.

I bet you gonna go home with a lemon.

Dont expect edge-of-the-seat performance :) Do expect water ingress, rusty boot floor, to change the timing belt ASAP, 26-30mpg and to have a vehicle that you will love for a long time, they grow on you:) Be warned :)

Thanks for the info RichM, I was supprised when I could pull away from a Td5 now I know why :)

Hey dude

With your 3.9 you will be rockin 182bhp, 231lb/ft !! Thats a 0-60 at 10.8 my friend!!

Td5 Blummin 16.3 seconds?? :D

Ha, mine should make it in 11.7!!

No wonder it's like driving a Bowler :D

love my disco!!! till it drop some fluids ..now more oftenly....first the coolant, then dextron ii,later engine oil....never ending story mates....but still crazy abt it!!...

Hi All, Well bit the bullet and bought it. Got some work to do on her, but not bad condition for an old'en.
Have got a little whining noise when you come off the throttle though? But when its under load it disappears!
Already done some welding on her in a few places.
But wife says it will keep me busy!

the whining is could be anything tbh

remove front propshaft, see if it stays or goes. then remove rear.

if the noise goes then you know its an axle noise, probably diff.

remeber to drive in difflock when the proipshaft is off, and drive cautiously.

otherwise it could be box or transfer. drain the oil on both - if theres chunks in there you got problems. if theres anything less than medium size particles of metal, it's fine, just live with it :)

Thanks Mr Noisey i will give that a try, just trying to sort out the traditional leaks first to save my driveway! Thats after i try and get the central locking fixed, the rear wiper working and a few other niggles!
Sure goiong to keep me busy for a while!
