hi all. 1990 2.5td 90
ive just fitted a recon 4 bolt power steering box as old one had a prob with the shaft dropping down and causing play on dropm arm.
but now I have a horrible noise coming from my steering.
ive bled the system and checked all pipes- all ok.
but on closer inspection when the steering wheel is turned and the pump is put under tension I can see the pump pulley start and stop!
so does this mean my pump is dead? also if I drive with it like this will I damage my new box?
any help appreciated as I need my 90 for work in the morning.

If the engine doesn't sound like it is straining more than usual when you turn the wheel then it's probably your belt slipping, either worn or not enough tensiion.

thanks for reply mate.
ive just took it round the block and when im moving there is no noise, even when im just crawling. the noise is ony when stationary.
on closer inspection I have noticed that the tensioner is at max. so im hoping a new belt in the morning will conquer that horrible noise.
I also fitted today new terrafirma track bar , drag link bar and rtc damper- but don't think this would have any adverse effect. But then what do I know haha. im deffinatley in the learn as I go along bracket on these land rovers.

Turning the steering while stationary takes the power steering more effort and therefore more load on the pump. If the belt is on the borderline then it may have just enough grip to drive the pump when moving but then slips under load when stationary

That's what I'm hoping mate. Just panicked earlier thinking that I might knacker the box again. Thanks again for advice

Hi guys, quick update- I finally finished work while it was still light and fitted new belt- problem solved! Cheers again for advice.

Hi guys, having some more probs with steering- fitted new belt and its been fine for a week or so but started getting a juddering in steering, so checked under and the belt was on inside out ( teeth on outside) so put this right and next day same thing had happened again. And again today!!! Anyone know why this is happening? Find it strange that it flips over- I'd of thought it would just come off altogether!

something must be out of alignment somewhere, im guessing its pushing the belt toward the engine, hence the flip, intriguing though...
