I am trying to find the Crankshaft Position Sensor and also the Engine Speed Sensor. RAVE says LH rear of engine for both, but without a photo or even a diagram I'm bug***ed if I can find them. It's pretty dark & dirty down there.

I still have my intermittent fault (engine cut-out).

My new Faultmate says: BOSCH EDC detected fault 02081 Engine Speed Sensor invalid value, High Circuit, Major fault, Fault logged, Intermittent.

So I wan't to check the connections to both of the above for starters (no pun intended  ), before I book it into a garage to look at it.

All help gratefully recieved - thanks.

its been a while since I've been under there but I think from deep dark depths of my memory, crank position sensor was on the nearside rear of the engine block, about opposite the starter motor, I think the lead from it had a blue pull appart connector and went up in the direction of the coilpacks... Not sure about the ess I've never touched that, but in my mind, laying on my back with the back end of the engine level with my eyeline, the crank position sensor was about directly over the propshaft, could just get a 1/4 drive socket on a long extension onto the two little bolts that hold it in

sorry , just remembered, I think the connector for the cps is up near the coil packs... I remember scraped knuckles and lots of cursing things being JUST out of reach for stumpy butchers fingers

He's got a diesel.
The Crank Sensor is below the starter motor on the diesel, held in place with a single bolt. There's a diagram on Rave under the fuel system - BMW Diesel - Repair section.
The photo of a crank sensor in plate 146 of the ETM is from the petrol model. The photo you want is plate 186, Engine Speed Sensor
