hi, dont know if anyone can help me with my dead p38, its a 4.6 m reg petrol, no power to starter motor, starter motor checked by local garage & they say its ok, no check engine light so bought a sync mate for gems, still no joy, it gave 4 red flashes, has been like this for 2 months now, i live in deal kent & looking for a mobile mechanic who knows the p38 & has testbook, rovacom, autologic. really miss my rangie & would really appreciate any pointers, regards paul.

Have you checked the power cable to the starter motor for corrosion inside the sleeving? Or is it just the starter solenoid not getting power? If the latter, check the underbonnet fuse box for signs/smells of burning.

if its auto transmission and you have had the air compressor burn out or fail check the maxi fuses in the fuse box under the bonnet its the fuse for the air suspension and the auto box if its blown thn thats could be whats stopping it from starting

thanks micky 22 & datatec, there was no smell of burning, am at work for another week & a half but will check the fuses again when i get back, reading some of the other threads on similar problems with starting i am drawn to the no show of check engine light, to be honest i know nothing about cars & just a little desperate now to find a local mechanic who knows about the p38, its been 2 months now & so far i have drawn a blank.

Has the ecus been fault read?
Not uncommon for the becm to have shut down totally seen three do it in the last month!

well you're right in as far as no check light means the becm and engine ecu aren't talking and so the car will not start. syncmate style devices can help provided (a) its not a physical problem like a loose or corroded connector or (b) the becm has not actually gone bad, ie some of the EPROM chips have not died. Irishrover and rick-the-pick are both very knowledgeable about BECMs and though the former very recently has "retired" either might be able to shed a bit of light.

edit. Hi Voguese,we posted together! Great minds and all that.. :)

Four days to retirement !!! :smokin::smokin::beer2::beer2::beer2::beer2:
Sounds like the Becm is locked out, in which case the Synchmate will not help.
The nearest to you is Rick the Pick, down Hove way. He's highly reccommended and won't rip you off with Dealers prices.
Send him a PM.

thanks for the input, yes i bought a sync mate for gems with no joy, just 4 red flashes, have not had the ecus read, phoned a couple of guys with diagnostics but as soon as i mentioned its a p38 they lost interest, so a bad connection somewhere or blown fuse would give the same symptoms i have with the no check engine light? as i mentioned earlier i know nothing about mechanics, but i dont like the look on peoples faces that do when i tell them my problem. they are as baffled as myself! cheers though chaps for your valid input, regards paul...

Pop into AutoBase in Walmer just off the Strand. Ask for Keith Atkins (think he works there now), he is a landy man, and knows the P38 well.
