Hi guys, dumb quesion, but where on my RangeRover am I going to find the crank sensor? It's a 4.0 v8. Is it going to be on top of the gear box underneath the coil packs? Or half way down the gearbox? I have had a quick gander, but it's a bit tight down the back of the bulk head. Thanks for your help?

the crank sensor is on the opposite side to the starter motor in the same place, you'l only see it from under the car. to take it off, you need an 8mm spanner or socket and the plug for it is behind the pass side head!

if you take the cam sensor out use new o ring, its a little fecker to get to when it dribbles oil!!!

guess how i found that out!!! lol!!!!

Hi guys, managed to find it thanks to you lot. Took it out, looks like its already been replaced with an after market one, have noticed the plastic has got a groove in it just off the target? Is it supposed to have one, or is this whats causing my running problem?

huh, there should be a thin metal sensor, this senses the tangs on the fly wheel, if this has a droove in it it could be damaged. mine had a groove that was caused by one of the tangs bieng bent, turn engine with a inch socket on the crank pulley bolt and check the tangs are straight. if one is bent tease it straight and continue. mark the start position with a bit of tippex or similar or you'l me at it all day!!

if its the cam sensor. its coated in plastic i assume to stop oil ingress. it will need replacing and the reason investigating. when you get another, be sure to get the correct year type as they changed the plug fitting on the later engine!!

It's got the metal point that comes out the sensor, really thin about half inch long, looks a bit like a needle. This goes into the round plastic sensor, like the cover for the metal piece of the sensor. It's the plastic piece that has the slight groove in it.

i think there should be a groove there, i seem to remember mine having one, i can check on sat as i'll be at the car, i'll let you know.

hi guys sorry to bring up old thread ,but this is what my sensor is like, mine wont start.the sensor was replaced by previous owner but new one has groves wore in to it,can this be why not starting?will i have to space the sensor out a little so it does not rub?is there any way to test the sensor?its like the sensor is rubbing the flywheel.thanks guys.

dont think there is an o ring on it,there was a aluminium spacer,i read somewhere the bush that holds the sensor slips inside the bell housig and makes it rub,was this the problem you had?how did you fix it?when i took it out there was only 1 bolt holding it in,there should have been 2,when i looked on rimmerbros web page it shows a few different sensors and one has only 1 bolt holding it in,dont know if it is the wrong sensor been put in.the old one in the glovebox that was took out is the same but thats not to say its been wrong too as it had scrape marks on it too.does anyone know which one it should be 1 bolt or 2 bolts its a m reg 4.0se auto thanks guys

sorted ,it was the crank sensor it seems the bush that the crank sensor sits in has moved in bell housing resulting in the sensor touching the flywheel,i just spaced the sensor out about 3mm and all is well for now:)
