hi

went to change my rear brake disc's and pads today, pads no problem BUT the bracket that the pads bolts to needs to be removed so i can remove the disc the problem is thats its bolted on with 2 star headed bolts which was problem fine when new but 13 years down the line extremely bad news as the head has rusted so when you put a socket on it it just rounds off, i have ordered up a set of bolt extractors to remove the star headed bolts, my intention is to replace with ordinary bolts can someone tell me the size i need?

thanks Alan

You can order new bolts from Land Rover, you should replce with correct gear.

I recently replaced my rear discs, and I removed those bolts no problem, after tapping the correct size socket all the way down, so it could not be rounded off.

I did find that, the disc retaining screws would not come out, so I had to drill those out, which was easy thankfully.

I do not remember what the access is like, can you not grind the heads off? The thread will come out easy then.

yes grinding them off is the last option, then i just need a stud remover, is it possible to order theses bolts on-line any were? as the local dealers are not the most helpful

Lots of heat usually helps greatly with rusty bolts, sounds like youve already fecked the bolts up?

yes the bolts are fecked, there is nothing for the scocket to hold onto as the star bits are just rust, would not matter if its heated or hammered on as its just rust, i will get them of with bolt extractors when they arrive or last resort grind them of

what i need is the size of the bolts so i can replace them

Never overlook a good old fashioned Stilson wrench. I too would advise getting the proper item from Landrover rather than replacements.

If you grind the head off, there will no longer be pressure in the bolt/stud and you will have the depth of the caliper bracket sticking out from the back, mole grips and just undo.

take caliper off, nip to scrappy and get one off a rover 75 front!

the caliper its self is fine, its the bolt that holds the caliper housing on to the hub

i have ordered 8 new bolts (2 for each caliper) at present i am only doing the rear disc's and pads but best be prepared as i suspect the front bolts will also be in poor condition with rusted heads
