P38 - 4.0 vs 4.6?

I'm new to the forum and am after some advice.

I am in the market for a '95,'96,'97,'98 P38 and was wondering whether to go for a 4.0 or 4.6.

What are the pro and cons for the two and what are your recommendations?

Oooh this is going to start a debate. They are basicly the same engine except the 4.6 has a longer stroke. Go for as late a model as you can with the Bosch engine management - 1998 onwards. I will always say 4.6, as that is what I have and they tend to be higher spec.
 
theres no dignity lost in waiting for the AA, can you say the same about driving a gaylander???
Yeh, but theres waiting for the AA, and theres waiting for the AA with a bust P38. The patrolman would rather catch a ride in a passing Freelander than attempt to fix the P38.
 
doubt it, are you familiar with the AA's health, safety and welfare of employees at work policy?

section 38 clause P states:

under no circumstances should an emplyee allow himself to be carriend in a gaylander.
 
I think that both engines will achieve about the same average MPG, though the 4.6 is more powerful so I guess you wouldn't have to work it so hard?

4.6s also tend to be higher specification cars, and seem more plentiful than 4.0s.
 
I have to admit, as a potential P48 owner in the future this question is certainly of interest to me too.

For the sake of newbies like me.. and not to cause a war..

I would be interested in a Discussion re Range Rover versus Disco.. and for the sake of discussion, lets say year 2000 models.

When I come to buy my dream car, I want a car that is reliable, and doesnt spend all my cash at a garage..
 
thats easy disco.. i got both, disco never let me down. down side with disco is rust, p38 dont rust but engings are a problem unless you go for doozle one..
 
well 4.6 would always be my choice but then I am biased as thats what I have running on lpg cheap as chips to run and reliable and you dont get looked at funny coz your in a gaylander
