p38 4.0 engine

hi everyone new here i am looking to purchase a 1995 range rover 4.0 with a shot engine i have access to a 3.9 from a classic range rover my question is will this fit and if so anything that needs changing cheers in advance Darren

welcome bathgate sh.. you know how to jump n deep end 3.9 will go in i take it both auto or mans i cant for see any major problems,good luck with it

if not auto it is a lot of messing about, the big diff is the engine stroke lets know if you get it and take on the work your self, hope all goes well for you

the later P38 petrol engine is crossbolted and has provision for a load more sensors than the older 3.9/4.2. For starters, the front cover is different as the oil pump is driven directly from the crank and located in it as opposed to the old gear pump driven from the crankshaft/distributor drive. There are also more sensors which feed back to the engine ecu and separate coil packs as compared with a single coil feeding through a distributor. The basic block may be similar but not machined to take the crank position sensor for example.

crank sensor, cam sensor, intake man and front cover. Also knock sensors. I wouldnt bother. Get a decent p38!

i got a 4.0 for sale £350....

I know they are interchangeable because in '02 I had a 3.9 with a slipped liner & at that time short blocks were hard to come by, so the 'independant' fitted a factory 4.0 straight from being on display at (I think) Billing.

yes they are reverse compatible straight off the shelf 4.0 into 3.9 (blocks that is) the cam shaft needs changing (and the crank length is different i'm sure on the 3.5 not sure about 3.9 !!) but the 3.9 is not compatible off the shelf in the 4.0 body

as ive said i did consider it and i looked into it thoroughly and the work required to bring a pre 94 block upto p38 requirements is not worth the hassle!!

you can get a block that you know is a good un or a complete engine for that matter without the risk of damaging a block/engine that can be sold to recoup some of the cash!!

i have a block that needs new rings, possibly pistons but they look fine, it'll only cost a couple of hundred quid to refurb, which is what i was going to do, you can have for 100 quid!!!
