Because this is a Defender L316 with a TD5 engine as used in the BMW 528i, 728i, and Z3.

If the EGR is giving you grief (as they do) then disconnect it, better still, remove it completely.

It was explained to me thus - A "car manufacturer" (CM) asks "Lucas" (L) to make a given component... L then give CM a price per unit for the given number of units ... CM says that price is too high - we can only afford 10% of that cost ... to which L says fair enough, but reliability will go down to less than 1% of the MTBF ...

Any vehicle regardless of make/model with emissions kit on it will have problems.
OP appears to have the transit engine variant.
300 with EDC was before the td5 with electronic control.
