Hey everyone, I've been driving around in my dad's disco 2 for a while now and i've fallen in love with them, so ive decided to get myself one. Ive seen a nice spec facelift for £4k but its done 175,000 miles, its had 2 owners and has FSH to go with it, so im assuming its been looked after quite well.

Now ive had a 200tdi with over 200k miles on and it ran great, but im interested to know what peoples experiences are with high mileage TD5's. Id be doing a fair few miles in it myself.

Thanks :D
Tom

I would hope the mileage is nothing to a modern diesel engine which has had regular oil & filter changes. I say that because my 2001 Disco 2 TD5 had done 153k :)

Diff.

There's a 52 plate GS near me with 75k up for £4500.00 ono, so I think the 4k for tge high miler is steep.

146,500 on ours with no engine issues. Bits wear of course like propshafts, gearbox (our syncro is a bit tetchy, but ok if you are patient) we have no service history but I suspect the head gasket may have been done (new clips on lots of the cooling pipes)

Critical thing really is how does it drive?

Hi Tom, general points:

1. Facelift TD5 - nice vehicle;

2. Rear end of chassis rails prone to serious rust - careful underbody examination required !!

3. £4000 is too much for a 175k miler even though it is facelift; under £3k is more the mark and only if the SH is substantiated;

4. Stamps in a service book are meaningless unless they are supported with actual receipts. Let's face it,everyone knows service history is important so you'd keep the receipts wouldn't you. Service books are too easy to forge.

Hope that helps, good luck

Dave

PS I've had several at 160 to 170,000mls and they ran as sweet as a nut !!

Thanks for all the replies guys, i went to have a look at it today and it was knackered, looked as though the back end had been hand painted after an accident. I've had a good look around today for some others and found a few more with a more comprehensive service history, got my heart set on a facelift model too. ive read they made a fair few changes, and they look pretty sexy!

I have a 2002 (was 75k, now 90k), here's the list which will/may need resolution (and I've done on mine):

Replacement transmission oil temperature sensor (they light at far too low a temp as they get old)

Possible Three Amigos (search this forum - needs Option B mod ABS Mod - LAND ROVER CLUB V.I.).

Get one of these to be on the safe side too ABS Modulator Valve Kit for Land Rover Discovery 2 Td5 SWO500030 - 2002

Window regulators - both front windows £25 each

Drivers window motor - £40

TD5 Fuel regulator - £150

Transmission leaking oil over handbrake prop pads - replace seal £20

Cam cover gasket - £20

Tyres - £150 each

Brake Discs - £15 each

Pads - £70 total

Oil - £50

Fuel Filter - £15

Wet carpet with aircon - clean/remove drain nipples underneath - free

Watch out for leak at front leaving water/stains in front cabin roof lining

Apart from that, all good!
