Whilst been out in my 300tdi disco this weekend with some of my green laneing buddys, we went out in the peak, ive had a bit of an accident involveing a tree and my roof.. we were traveling along nice and steady (i was lead vehicle) and my disco found a bit of embankment and before you know it, the top part of the roof is stopping me from going over.. so after been winched rewards, my roof is now a mess.

has any one any ideas on what kind of a job it is to change the roof?
as we have a donor disco in the yard.

feel free to leave your feedback?

and smartarse know it all drivers, feel free to jog on bye :D

It's all part of the body isnt it?? i think you would have to cut it off and weld a new one on. It would have to be some accurate cutting too.

you will have to cut the whole woof off as close to the gutter channel as possible and seam weld a new one on,im not sure if the woof is a different metal to the sides tho im sure someone could shed some light on that,

if you cut the old off leaving say half an inch above the getter line , then cut the replacement a bit lower would it drop on with a bit of an overlap.....? might be easier than trying to get a perfect butt join.

Put a roof rack on to hide the damage ??

Any one selling a roof rack? :D

yerr the more i look at it the bigger the job gets, were going to get it in the workshop today and make a start, while were there were going to bobtail it too.

will upload so pics overtime to show our efforts!:D

How bad is the damage need pics, Could a good body worker not hammer it out then heat and cool it back to shape???

the roof is steel and the sub shell of the disco is steel aswell the only aluminium on them is the outer body panels wich remarkably are just glued n screwed on

yer best bet would be leave an inch round the gutter where you cut it and cut the donor roof as tight to the gutter as you can get it just make sure before you weld it to get all the gutter track back to clean bare steel before putting a nwelder anywhere near it

the inner roof supports on the donor roof will come off with a bit of verry gentle grinding

also a little after thought make sure you strip the loom out before cutting the damaged roof off as it runs in a channel down the passengers side of the roof also when you cut the knackered roof off try and leave the original crossmembers on the vehicle these will act as a guide to locate the new roof skin

its a long job to do but not exactly hard its all in the prepwork and cutting with these types of repairs

we really need some pics.... as long as all the glass is intact and the doors fit why bother going to great lengths to repair it. a lot of dents can be pushed out from the inside fairly easily.... if the damage is on top few people will notice and it only may become an issue if you decide to sell the vehicle.... and to be honest the condition underneath will be more of an issue than a few dents on top.
