Was in a rush this morning so didnt get to top it up, will have to wait until tomorrow.

James, do you have any comment on the gunk and likely cause?

Checked water level and it's down by the same amount (100 miles on the clock in the interim), some sludge in the provent.

Had a really good luck about and no obvious crusting to show coolant is leaking from pipes, plugs, pumps, stat.

:(

Get a static test done see if the system loses pressure.

ok,do as wammers suggests, pressure test and a sniff test, that will rule out hgf or other leaks/cracks etc.but it is not looking to positive at the min though really.:(

Oil level aint climbing so fingers crossed it's not a crack - from reciepts previous owner replaced head with remanufactured one at ~70K

Gasket that's on is 3 hole (thickest), presumably that's for piston protrusion and not because of head skimming? So if it turns out to be HG, can I still get a skim if it's warped?

Push come to shove I'll get a new AMC head and rebuild the short engine.

Static test needs the head off I take it, will order a head fitting kit from Turners then.

No, static test pressurises cooling system. Any drop indicates a leak. Also can be used to detect head gasket leaks. Also there is much higher pressure in the oil system than in the cooling system if there was an interactive leak you would expect oil in the water. Coolant can only get into the oil with engine stopped when coolant pressure exceeds oil pressure.

Deffo no oil in the water that I can see.

I'll renew all the hose clamps this weekend and see where that gets me whilst I try find a decent workshop to do the test.
