Hi all,

I have a reasonabe sized oil leak(s) which seems to be coming from many places.

I will start with the steering box - this appears to be leaking - can I replace seals or is a new box required? do i need any special tools, is it fed from the engine oil, or is it seperate?

Gearbox - also leaking, is this seperately filled with oil, or is it fed from the engine? if seperate, where do I fill it up and how do i check level - 5 speed.

I also have an enine leak, appears to be coming from right hand side, high up (if stood at front of vehicle), any ideas, are there any likely culprits?

Many thanks in advance..

Roy

What a surprise a tratter with an oil leak......

Steering box can be rebuilt but don't ask me how and is fed from it's own resevoir and should be leaking red fluid if it's power steering fluid

Gearbox and transfer box both have their own oil supply, I beleive there's an oil filler plug on the side of the tranny, check that you can loosen it BEFORE you drain the oil out via the drain plug underneath

Engine oil leak could just be rocker cover gasket but pictures would help narrow it down a bit

Welcome to the drippng world of tratter ownership:D

Hi Roy I think you could do with a Haynes manual, you could fit a seal kit to the steering box or buy a new steering box, maybe a 2.8 turn lock to lock instead of 3.5 lock to lock.
Gearbox isn't fed from engine,
Engine leak could be just rocker box cover gasket (need pics)
A manual would be of great benefit to you tho. its an invaluable source of information, just like this forum:D

Hi, I will deffo get a Haynes manual tomorrow. Thanks for advice.
I hate oil leaks and will have to address them.
I also have an xtype 4wd and have had a transfer case run dry in me and explode so I always worry when I see leaking oil...

Where is the best place to buy Defender spares from?

Paddocks is a good start for spares ebay are ok but britpart are a bit hit and miss quality wise. don't forget to use the search featur on this forum it's great and the advice you get on here from the landy bofins is amazing.

Depends on where you live and the Internet is your best friend, there's a really useful sticky on the main page that has exploded diagrams with all the part numbers. For me personally I work only twenty minutes from Craddocks but if I've got a part number I'll shop around

google stc2848 for lower steering box seal , it can be done with box in situ , but if shaft is grooved might not last long ,you dont know till you try, a few pics of leaks and surrounding area helps

Hi all,
Thanks for help and advice on this. It appears I have 3 leaks according to my local garage. I am going to get it booked in for him to do it as 3 is a bit too daunting for me to do in 1 go. Also the steering box looks like a pig of a job

If you're paying somebody each time you have a leak in a tratter you are either very very rich or you've bought the wrong motor.

Defenders are fairly straightforward to work on. They do tend to spring oil leaks from time to time, from Diffs, engine, gear box transfer box, Oil seals on the hubs etc etc and steering. I also don't like to see oil leaks especially as I leave mine parked up on my Bosses drive for several days at a time. Touch wood, I'm on a good run at the moment.
