hi all can anybody tell me how much oil the sump holds on a 93" 200 im going to atemped my first oil change and need to purchase new oil:eek:

On another forum people rave about Millars but I could never find any in Notts. I'm due a change too... I'll use the same I did last time... a cheap one!

would you no which oil would be best for the old girl:confused:

10w40 semi synthetic in the 200 and 300

i've tried a few different brands in my 300

fuchs xtr 10w-40
morris multivis 10w-40
mobil super s 10w-40

seems best with shell helix plus 10w-40 in it

I'm due one too..300tdi, any thoughts on semi synthetic 5w40? Only asking as I can get it free from work.;)

Lucky You
I've used 5w40 fully synthetic for six years with no problems other than at first oil leaked from the rocker cover and the sump but a nip on the bolts cured that. It comes out nearly the same colour as it went in 6000 miles ago but that's from a petrol engine.

5w40 is shown in the oil recommendations list for a diesel engine in my owners handbook.. but it dosen't give a spec to the grade as it does to the others listed, so may be not. 10w40 and 15w40 are listed as ok.

Anyway, not good to go for a lower sae grade oil if the engine is worn.

Cheers Coolio.... I know fully synth' is the better oil but temptation was kinda getting the better of me! I did promise myself when I got the Disco I would'nt scrimp on oil and stuff. I MUST BE STRONG ! :D

what brand is it Bill, i'll check it out

Pete

Thanks for that Mr Eater...... its Unipart DX Three. If it is a good qaulity oil with no downsides that would be great.

I can't find any technical data sheets on it Bill but the min spec for the 200tdi is API-CF / ACEA B2-96

I'm pretty sure the unipart oil will be higher than that so should be fine

5w-40 is thinner when it's cold so will offer better cold start protection than a 10w or 15w as it can get round the engine a lot quicker.

does it say anything on the back of the can?

Thanks Peater... I did look at the back of it(25 ltr drum)and there was some tech' data. I'll compare with the no's you gave me.
Thanks for your help
Bill

Unipart don't produce oil but they know someone that does, Mobil. So check their stuff out if you really - really need the know the specs. most oils have improved and now supersede the above specs.
I'm sure Halfords own oil is Mobil.

There's oil now for Ford Audi VW.. whats all that about?.

It's to do with exhaust emissions !!!

I am going to change the oil in my 300tdi tomorrow and was going to treat it to some fully synthetic and a flush. Does semi-synth last longer or it it better to change cheap oil more often??

Personally I think it's best to use good quality oil AND chain it regularly, I do ours every 5000mls (changing the fuel and air filters at the same time)and if you've just got the car, I would treat the first oilchange as a flush - so do the oilchange, run it for 500-1000mls then do it again.

When you do the oilchange, leave it to drain for ages, half an hour at least, go and have a coffee or something. The more of the old oil that you can get out the better. Incidently, you do know to take it for a run to warm it up first, don't you??

I've had it about 18 months. I was going to warm it up a little bit to thin the oil a bit. Although I warmed it up too much once and burnt my hand !!

Now you don't want to be doing that !!!

Have you seen the Difflock sump plug? It's a really excellent idea that I have installed on both our Discos and it makes doing oil changes soooooo much easier. And you don't burn your hands :D :D
