Great tips Sam.

I like the fuel tank breather idea. Need to do that so its gone on my to do list. I also like the cig lighter sockets.

I am waiting to get some new screws as I already decided to nick your idea about mounting the trailer sockets lol.

Great spot with the threaded bar extension too. Man you're just a minefield of neat little ideas.............

BTW, I still have no rear seats and really like it. Unfortunately I need to find somewhere to mount the new spare as I removed the wheel carrier too and once the seats go in I will need the boot. What about the bonnet........

Ian, cheers :)

tbh mate its mainly through experience.

get back from a weekend and this this and this need attention. sort it out, next weekend its this and this.

im pleased to say that now i can go out and usually have no problems, nearly 2 years into the project.

but thats the reason why the 'neat little ideas' as you sais have come about, not by me necessarily being a genius although id have you believe it, but by figuring out ways around problems.

really has been a rolling rebuild this one and only now is the learning curve starting to level off.

:)

youre gonna struggle on the bonnet mate, its too heavy really, and too wide. you wont be able to see over it sufficiently.

its rear door or boot imo. you have to mod your rear door hanger cos the low offset wheel sticks out way too far, needs mounting closer to the door and higher up than standard. still, a lot of weight for that door.

other option is roof (rack) but its a lot of weight high up.

build a shelf in the back rested on the dickie seat mounts and then you have enough room for tyre and recovery gear and seats. i managed like this for around a year, but decided i didnt need to put the seats back in after welding the rear.

much happier now because weight is lower and further forward, in between the axles (heaviest stuff at front) whereas before it was lots of heavy gear high up and far back, felt very arse heavy off and on road.

cheers

I bet you're still have a long list of o do notes though lol. We all have I think.

Just putting together my list as we speak. Already quite long but has silly jobs as well as big issues. The next few months will be fun

the only things on my list at the moment are:

gearbox oil (which im quite happy to leave on there, only done a year ago probs)

lights (as discusses previous, need to sort out heads, beacons and work lights)

winch tickover speed mod (which again is something i'll have a play with when i feel like it)

no actual problems :D

Yeah I like the door being free from the wheel weight and as you say the offset and height doesn't work.

Bonnet = pipe dream and **** take. You're right too heavy and can't see.

Roof rack, well I only like the safety devices one anyway and yes it's a lot of weight up top so would only use this option when camping etc.

In the back is a good option and if I can mange space that's where I would like it. It's amazing how much kit you need in the car just to drive around some country lanes

oh right i see, gawd, you got me!

yeah theres a lot of gear, there is a thread in the laning section called 'what kit do you carry' where i detailed all i carry. i carry 40% recovery, 20% camp & cook, 40% tools and spares. lots of weight there and the thing is pretty brimmed these days but not higher than top of doors, so weight is nice and low.

hi-lift jack and other heavy things needs to be rear footwell, rest of stuff can be stuffed in most places :)

Wait spending your money until you have been driving off-road for a while. The vehicle is more than capable as is. And if you don't find any mods to do .. Then probably something breaks and you need money for parts ;o)

GREEN HORNET ...when we going to see the beast in action , is it nearly ready for a shake down yet.;):)

Soon matey, soon. Have a pay and play near us in a week or so. Should be fun. Just looking at a secondhand winch bumper to tie me over until I build mine. Need to protect the corners

Yet another interesting thread. It was interesting reading about the defender v disco comparison. As I understand it, the defender was a major update on teh series based on lessons learned from the RRC which was in effect, the same vehicle as a Discovery - You might say that a Defender is a Discoveryised Series :p
My next challenge is to work out an effective yet cheap way of waterproofing my v8.
What is the advantage of moving the trailer socket to the rear pillar?

I suppose there is that. Can't help thinking there would be disadvantages though too, it means the trailer wiring has to undergo a lot of movement when the vehicle turns...

do a search for 'waterproof v8' and 'v8 swim' etc, theres loads of threads. i think there was one recently where i posted links to previous ones where i had explained what i had done (with decent success)
