Long story short... 4 years ago we bought (for very humble money) a mid 80's truckcab just out of mot that needed a new engine & chassis. Filled out v5 etc and the seller said he would post it along with a sorn form i filled in with him. Today checked status online and the dateless ni. reg now comes up as a 2011 defender which is mot'd and on the road. Bit unfair of him grrrr. Dont have sellers details anymore so is there anyway i can find out if my vehicle got a new plate when he took the old one off ??? Cheers

Do you have the original V5 or at least the new keepers supplement?

I don't think he can legally do that as you bought it with that plate and were not aware he was removing it, he should not have done that and you should have been faster sorting out the log book for the vehicle.

You need to contact the DVLA in Swansea about your vehicle as it no longer has a registration and will have to be appointed an age related plate or perhaps it's original? But you will have paperwork to fill out and hoops to jump through in getting it MOT'd etc, which they will need to verify that it has the correct VIN number before issuing plates on a vehicle that they don't know exists, is it SORN? Did you make a declaration of intent?

Sorn was filled in at same time as v5 was filled in but stupidly trusted seller to send both to dvla which he obviously didnt. Vehicle still has chassis number visible and vin plate too. It aint going to pass an mot without a lot of £££ so not going to risk rebuild until i know if i can get a v5. Have been preoccupied rebuilding 2 other defenders since getting this one so it has sat at back of shed since the day it was bought. Yes should have chased v5 before now but basically forgot....

Do you have a receipt for the purchase?

You need a bit of time on the phone with DVLA for sure.

Do you know the last registered address when you purchased it.
Get all the numbers you can off the vehicle and go to LR if it’s original I think they can match them.
Might be a bit of a journey.:)

Good luck and lesson learned I guess.

If you have the chassis number visible & the vin plate you may have to have an inspection. Sometimes you trailer them for inspection. Can be a painful process for older motors. But if you have the original engine/gearbox axles etc it’s all in your favour.
You may not get the old number plate back but hey you may be getting a ringer off the road

Just apply for the V5 & see what happens;)
