need to change the transfer box on my defender for a disco box for better motorway speeds. not sure which gearbox i have, are all transfer boxes the same?

Right. If it has it's original gearbox it'll be an LT77. Tranny box off a 200tdi disco will go straight on you might have to change the handbrake cable fittings I think. Pretty sure the same transfer box was used on the later 300tdi models but someone here will be able to confirm this.

are the handbrake cable fittings easily available as was hoping to change it on next trip to uk which will include finding and buying it

i fitted a disco transfer box to my 90 but i had to drill and tap 2 very shallow 8mm threads on the rear bearing support casing to take my 1986 defender handbrake cable mount/adjuster Jai

Hi Bevhelee,
As an alternative you could fit an Overdrive instead, which will be much less work. This will give you another 10 mph roughly and much less noise. Plus it means you don't change the original gearing ratios.

hmmmm what to do....

option 1 - spend probably less than 80 quid on a good used 1:22 ratio tranny box from a disco and spend approx 3 hours fitting it

option 2 - spend 1500 quid on an OD and spend an hour fitting it
