So, travelling back quite happily in the 110 from kelmarsh. Suddenly a loud grinding noise starts from the front end. Slow it down a bit. Noise still being there i decided to push it to the next junction. 200 yards later... loud bang, big dent in the floor and near miss in the underwear department!! Pull over sharpish and the front props come off at the transfer box! Only changed the uj a few weeks ago and now it's gone and blown up ffs. Thankfully no other damage so when the rac get me home then it'll be a new prop. All in all not fun in the slightest!!!!

Ooooh,

Were you off roading at Kelmarsh?

Sounds like it was not fun at all. When you say the front prop has come off, what has failed exactly? when you get a chance can we see some photos?

Hopefully only damage is to the prop and your skivvies.

Cheers

Nope it didn't go all the way to kelmarsh. Stopped at a mates in Coventry and got a lift the rest of the way. I think it's a rapid failure of the uj bearings as the yoke has separated.

No photos yet as I'm still on the side of the m6. Wave if you drive past! I'm between junctions 6 and 7 northbound

Oh, Sorry did not realise you were still sat on the side of the MWay, be safe.

Let us know what make of UJ it was as well. seems strange a new UJ would fail if fitted correctly and greased.

Pretty certain it was a gkn one. I've done plenty before. Must have got something misaligned somehow. I'll be fitting a new prop anyway

Albert

I had a GKN one fail at two weeks road only use .

I do wonder why?

With proper fitting and greasing then I cannot see why one should fail, unless there are dodgy copies out there, and even then I would not have thought it would be worthwhile making gkn copies.

Cheers

Have no idea fitted one of front prop and one on rear prop on wife's green 90, during testing it developed a vibration when checked, the rear has so much play its crazy . Old UJ is still tight !
Rather than do it again I fitted a new rear prop.

Both GKN uj's where pressed in not hammered.

Yes front one is fine, Helping out at a 4x4 tyre fitters place the things I see are sometimes frightening !

Finally got home. I'll get pics up when I give it a better inspection. I'm wondering about the circling not being seated properly but as it's pretty well smashed up so it's going to be hard to tell what was the cause

I had something similar happen to me last year. It appeared that one of the yokes had broken up. I had recently changed the bearings using a hydraulic press, and the old ones had been a bit stiff to remove, but I don't think I'd overly stressed it. The bearings were GKNs but the shaft itself was Britpart.

Glad everyone's OK!

Ive fitted many u/js with a hammer on site etc its bit of an art so as not to drop a roller.
For the cost of new cheap props I dont know why anyone others with fitting u/js? one of them jobs where as get older you get wiser.

Plus and this is the most important bit, how can you drive an old land rover and not carry any tools!
One of them prop sockets, ratchet and 9/16 spanner 30 mins max and you are on your way.

Well I'm certainly going to fit a new prop on the front and I may well consider it for the rear next time a uj goes. I've only ever press fitted ujs as I tend to find the needles go flying if I hammer them.

As for the tool kit I do have one however it isn't currently in the vehicle due to a lack of security and storage space as the door locks don't work and I don't want to bolt a box in the back as it's used for farm use as well. I've got some ideas about tool storage so I'm going to see what I can get done.

Turns out it was a circlip which had come loose. One bearing had come out. Found it on the chassis and appears to be immaculate inside. No other damage apart from a few dents in the floor and a near miss with the wiring on the chassis. The prop is a definate write off anyway.

So to conclude. Next time I do a uj I'll be more thorough cleaning out the groove for the circlip and make sure it's seated properly.

Albert

Well at least you found the reason for the failure, which although it was a pita you can keep in mind for the future and also a good reminder for the rest of us.

I always make sure to rotate the circlip in its slot when the UJ is assembled.

Cheers
