I had the same problem with a rear prop ! luckily i had just pulled up to speak to a mate and heard a clunk underneath..... the axle end had dropped on the
road :( that was a gkn uj i fitted 2 weeks before...... circlip failed to seat right (only me to blame) :oops:
 
Yes, that looks a bit like it's lost a circlip, one of the cups has come out and the other end of the spider has made a bid for freedom by eroding the yoke. Here's what happened to mine last year:

What you can also find with aftermarket u/js is the circlip is to fat to properly seat in the groove.

On my 90 Ive tried britprt/bearmach and gkn u/js none lasted, they never failed as I greased them monthly and noticed the play, new prop and a few years later its still good.
 
I learned about checking the circlip is secure after a drop arm ball joint replacement. 3 or 4 days after changing the joint, the steering went a bit vague on a corner. I managed to pull over and the innards had fallen out on the road :eek:
 
Well at least it's not just me then :p I've pulled off the prop so at least I'll be able to drive it to work in the morning in diff lock.

I'll have a look around but it'll probs be an eBay special

I like to go all the way round a circlip tapping it with a drift to make sure it has every opportunity to rattle itself into the groove. I had one drop out of the steering arm in late 2012 which made the steering go a bit vague.
 
I hate getting under my landy. I'm always worried I'll see something else about to fall off or rust through. I only grease things about once per year which equals about 400 to 600 miles.

I usually cover about 3-4000 miles a year so I suppose I should be greasing ujs more often. As for finding issues underneath it's better to find them before they get serious.
